Today my new KR4 TI arrived, with boost driver and 4x 519A DD in 4500K. Very nice light. One thing I do not understand: after all the recent firmware developments, with @ToyKeeper 's major time investments and AndĂșril improvements - why does Hank ship this light with a 14 months old firmware, ignoring all the updates? I do not understand this. OK no problem, I will update the KR4 - but Hank downgrades his own product by not implementing the latest developments. Very strange. I told him this by email, as well.
I had a similar issue with two recent lights; a K9.3 and a dual-channel D4V2 that shipped with 2021-vintage Anduril that did not even have the ability to adjust ramping speed.
I kind of get it with the K9.3 as itâs likely a slow-mover, but the D4V2 shipping with a far older version than lights I got last year, including another dual-channel, struck me as an oversight.
For the same reason Phone OEMs donât want to indefinitely support their phones: it costs money. And once the money has changed hands (from you, to them) anything else they do to support it is just a cost. Plus they rather you just buy a new device, thatâs when they make money again.
I donât know how Hank works, but I assume he does some initial R&D for a new light. Maybe some Anduril tweaks if it needs special support. He gets it working and ships.
Unless there are major issues, any more work he does to support new versions of Anduril are a cost and distraction for him.
I think if Anduril adopted strict versioning and LTS releases, Hank (or anyone) could grab the latest LTS release of the version used in that lightâs initial development, with low risk, and perpetually update it with basic QA. If they were so motivated.
Without this, he has to basically go through the HW & SW integration, QA, every time Anduril gets a new commit, for every model he sells, and this would cost him lots of money and time. Plus he might uncover new bugs.
BTW, my recent D4SV2 has Anduril 1, I will need to update that as well.
Correct. I suggested to him to create an option for each light, on his website, related to an additional price, for an update to the latest compatible firmware release. That would still mean more work for him, but he would get more money as well to cover this.
Might be worth his while, might not as Hankâs already got an unenviable SKU proliferation challenge with both on- and off- menu config options. Iâd expect this to be an off-menu option if offered.
Today Iâm going to flash my D4K 519A (No Boost) with the latest firmware. According to product check it comes with KR4 firmware. Itâs any reason to use the KR4 firmware or I can flash the latest D4V2? Any difference with these firmwares? The aux leds works fine with the KR4 firmware.
Itâd be helpful if people could help spread the word for that, too. This is, by a wide margin, the most frequently-asked question⊠and I could use some help spreading the answer.
I was messing with my first-batch KC1 and noticed the pill was loose, had a bit of rattle. Decided that I was going to tighten it as much as I possibly could so it would not get loose again.
It no longer has the o-ring exposed while the light is off. Pic is around 1/8th of a turn from turning on.
Do you remember, from further up in this thread, my D4Sv2, single-channel, lighted-switch thing? Was that just a unique case?
Iâm still a little fuzzy on what hex I can use on that one tbh lol. The 3-ch came out and I didnât want to bother anyone while that was being put together.
I know all those 2 channel hexes have had a lot of changes since then and I got lost in the excitement. I canât remember where we landed on what would be best for the single channel lighted switch D4Sv2.
Cool, I can stop pestering him about that like I did on my last couple orders. Still have to flash my 219b/UV D4V2 and my K9.3 though. Not being able to adjust ramping speed on a K9.3 is a hassle, and I really like 3C â Unlock to off.
