I have an unorthodox fix for that…use green lighting exclusively for a few minutes…everything will look more purple
This is actually a good point. If you use a given light for a few days, and I mean use it not stare at it on a white wall, you just get used to it. Even my very green Olight stopped being objectionable when I wasn’t comparing it to something else.
Too true.
I dedomed one of the 4500K Nichias in my D3AA and put my thumb over the other 2. Continually swapping back and forth, the dedome looked very orangy. But I threw caution to the wind and picked the other domes off. Nicest tint of any light I have now I’m not comparing.
Interested in how the NTG35 compares to the NTG50 with beam shots above? I’m hovering over this emitter, or the 4200K.
I dunno… I’ve tried, multiple times. Like, I tried to use a high-CRI SST-20 during the FW3A project. It never got better. Even using it as my only light for days, it still looked green and made my eyes hurt. The longer I used it, the worse my color perception got, until I felt like I was using a sodium vapor lamp. It was like wearing colored party glasses. Then I’d switch to pretty much any other light, and it was like taking the glasses off… suddenly all the colors would come back.
For a neutral calibration of color, I like to leave a light next to my bed, wait until I wake up in the middle of the night, and then turn it on to see how it looks when my eyes are completely fresh. I’d recommend giving that a try, to see how things look without the bias of prior light exposure.
I guess some people are more sensitive to it than others, or Ive just not tried a truly horrid emitter. I’ve not tried the SST-20 in anything other than deep red but I’m aware that it is not well-liked.
I’ve never had any issues with it either, but then again, I’m color blind.
I was thinking moreso along the lines of actual green light, lol…i have a marauder mini that has a green mode…it starts giving me a headache after a little while, but most lights, even cool white, take on a “rosier” hue for a while.
That begs the question…do sone people naturally see only in high contrast with 0 gradient?
I’ve also found this to be the case for me. Swapped the 5000K mystery CRI LED bulbs in the office for 4000K 90 CRI and things seemed mighty yellow for a couple days before the effect faded and now everything looks fine.
Flashlights … got preferences for sure, but within a reasonably wide range of white, I’m good for navigation + basic tasks / household project work.
Can’t speak for others, but color blindness comes in different varieties. I’ve got deuteranopia, which is a type of green color blindness. What that means? Not sure, but dark reds and greens look similar, as does brown. I also sometimes get deep blue and purple mixed up. I’m just a sample size of one though, so take it with a grain of salt. All I know is what usually pops for other people either shows up faint, or not at all for me. I can perceive green, but it’s not as vibrant as what others see.
More or less the same over here. I suck at these tests with colored dots where others see numbers or characters. I only see dots. My mother thought I just was too lazy to remember the names of the colors. So she spent some very frustrating hours with me. But I was not stubborn or stupid, I was colorblind.
Turned out her father was too! He was not stupid, but very stubborn. And when they found out he was colorblind they finally had a valid reason to fire him (being an enginedriver for the Dutch Railroad ).
That’s crazy, assuming he had been operating for some time…
Well, his eyesight was excellent. The old signs also included an arm (semaphore), so he could tell the color of the light by the position of the arm. And forget about a pitchblack night in NL. Certainly in area’s where trains go. Or maybe he was just lucky.
PSA - Hank’s $25 FedEx shipping option to the US seems to now use FedEx’s lower tier SmartPost level, which has USPS deliver last-mile. Previously the FedEx option was at the International Priority level and packages arrived within 2-3 days.
SmartPost is horrible, I made that mistake once.
Are you sure it’s UPSP delivery for the last mile instead of FedEx? I was told by the agent that it’s FedEx, but it could be wrong. The total delivery time should still be within one week.
The “International Priority level” FedEx can not be used anymore, since the customs clearing fee plus the tariff is more than $40 per package, let alone the shipping fee.
I have confirmed from the FedEx tracking that the last mile delivery is “FedEx ground”, not USPS.
Thank you for confirming! Will update when received.
Sorry OT
This surely is “next-level” dedication to the hobby. Great idea but I can’t do it for fear of being kicked out to the living room. My wife not only is a (puzzled) flashlight muggle but also wakes up easily with light.
My favorite lights are next to my La-Z-Boy in the TV room. There are often multiple light shows during commercials.
