Using Caustic Soda safely

It is dangerous, but no more than a chainsaw or a pistol would be. You have to use precautions with education and keep safety in mind. Older folks use to use this stuff all the time, its was essential for making soap. Some people still do it as a hobby. If a person doesn’t want to take the time to learn the do’s and don’ts and educate themselves, Then please don’t touch any of the other dangerous items I listed or the caustic soda.

I’m not telling any one to do this, just trying to help keep you safe if you do.

I wanted to take the paint off the bezel of a DST 3C. Did some reading and finally chose a safer chemical called Greased Lightning. Can be had in the US but not sure where you’re at. There’s 4 kinds, I chose the super strength. See this thread for the different kinds I posted about. PICs of the modded de-domed DST - Confirmed XML2 best setup

Dropped the black bezel in a plastic container, let it sit for a couple min and then agitated it every couple min. 15 min later, paint’s gone and one nice piece of uncoated aluminum!

Hope this helps…

Have you ever read the safety precautions on greased lightning.

Yeap, I was very careful with it, didn’t have any problems using it, thanks for the info.

I have done many lights removing the anodize. Greased Lightning works, but is slow. I generally use a drain cleaner. I mix the stuff up in a shallow container that has a glass coating. Any glass container will be OK. Soaking the light will soften the anodize, but it leaves a film on the aluminum. I will put the piece in a soapy solution for a few seconds, then scrub the light with a stiff brush.

Just don’t get the drain cleaner on your skin…….
