Yep, the only pocketknives that I like anymore are assisted-openers with a flipper.
I know that’s a pretty specific subset, but “that’s my jam.”
Yay, just (re)found one of my lost threads… just catching up since, like, January or so.
Lotta custom work. Anyone follow diesineveryfilm on the yoo toob? He does stuff like make meat-cleavers out of old brake-rotors, and battle-clubs out of old wrenches, etc. Takes out frustrations on melons, too. And usually has The Spider Man making a guest appearance, as well. Fun!
Ah, here we go. He just made a wasabi from carbon-fiber.
Still “carrying” (in my bag) my PF clone that GB was selling for cheap way back when. A bit small, but I keep coming back to it. Smooth, sharp, comfy to hold… noice knoife.
Around the house, was/am using those S&W closeouts from a ways back. Blecch. Nice and sharp blades at first, but go dull after cutting, well, air. Even this “tacticool” AO model, I relegated to letter-opener duty, and still sometimes have to saw through the paper.
The Holy Grail eludes me or I am unable to be pleased with any single knife to the point of stopping my search. Frustrating at times, rewarding at others…
I have tried a couple of Giant Mouse knives, and most recently a LionSteel. Nice knives all but…
Recently I have been carrying the Medford Slim Praetorian Flipper that I modified to suit me. Am again discovering that a thin knife is not really my “jam”.
I am beginning to believe I’ll have to make my own… not that I’m delusional and think I can do better but simply after all the work it will require I’ll HAVE to carry it and that will be that. Lol

Yep, my favorite knife right now is pretty thick, and I like it that way.
I have a lot of knives that I like, but I think I EDC the thickest one.
My fixed blade that I made for tougher chores is not being carried these days. My hip is still healing and I wear the lightest most comfortable clothes possible. (Nerves that were cut close to the surface are still a frayed mess, like a little bunch of barbed wire under the skin.) That said, the knife in my pocket has to take on larger jobs. I walk every morning and have had to cut low hanging limbs or heavy woody weeds from my path, sucks not having my purpose made larger blades!
6.5” MagnaCut blade at 1/4” blade stock.
In the 2 months that I’ve been able to walk again I’ve logged 239.5 miles! I am SO ready to get back in my regular clothes with my full EDC compliment!
Simple, time tested (by me), and always reliable. Shame Magnacut wasn’t available when Doug was collaborating with BM back then. As much as I love M390, I can’t help but think this configuration in MagnaCut would be the absolute nirvana in pocket steels.
MagnaCut is being used much more these days, it might be interesting to see which revered models get upgraded… Spyderco is showing us new runs in MagnaCut and Benchmade too has started putting it to use.
Two of my recent Giant Mouse ACE line have the new steel, it’s really gaining popularity quite fast!
I still like 3V for a heavier use working blade but the pocket EDC role may be open, watching closely…
This Benchmade Mini Bugout has been staying in my shorts pocket this summer… It is sharp, slices well, and I like the light weight:
Im not doing any heavy tasks lately, just upening boxes of flashlights and occasionally a bag of garden mulch.
Actually been carrying a PM2 with S90V blade lately. I kinda do rotations, favor one a few days or a week and switch .
A few of the nicer daily EDC shots from the last week or so…
What specific make and model is that Damascus knife?
Civivi Cachet. I got it on a whim and ended up loving it. It is an easy recommendation either in 14C28N or this 9Cr/10Cr Damascus.
The last post in this thread was by me, in August. The big forum change here really did some damage or people just stopped using this section?
Either way, I got my Black Friday hot sauce haul and I’m carrying this special edition of the Gemini.
Can’t speak for anyone else, but for me, the biggest problem was the system “forgetting”, or at least not knowing, all my previous threads, so email notifications dropped to zero.
If I’d stumble across a thread like this one in passing, or remember it and try searching for it, then I could try catching up (last-read counter would also be reset to 0) to find more or less where I left off, and then try picking it up from there.
So that would be a chore for just one thread. Now imagine trying to catch up on dozens and dozens of old threads that were long-forgotten but you would still be interested in.
Eg, if someone finds and necroposts in the “dedoming XM-L emitters” thread. You’d never even know if unless you scanned the main page constantly, whereas with the old system you’d just (continue to) get an email notification.
So, yeah, I imagine a lot of old threads took a huge hit.
Back as my friendly non-threatening EDC since two weeks, my Kizer Yorkie. It had a righthanded-only clip so I carried it without a clip for a while last year and then it was swapped out. A few weeks ago I drilled and tapped M2.5 screwholes for the clip on the other side (which was much easier than I feared), making carrying it much nicer, added a fresh 17 degrees razorsharp edge, and now it is back!
…unless you have a white’n’tan couch.
Pretty boring compared to all your fancy knives, but it’s tiny, lightweight and gets the job done. Sadly I’m currently in Germany, and here even this tiny fella counts as a weapon and I’m not allowed to carry it on me… So it has to travel in the backpack only, that seems to be allowed. Although I didn’t fully understand the laws.
