What is a BOB, GHB or EDC? What goes in one? And why the heck would I want one anyway?

I have toilet paper in a vacuum packer bag and that is inside a heavy duty ziploc bag to keep the damp out after the vacuum seal is broken. Make sure to remove the cardboard tube first make it much easier to pack also go for good quality TP, this is one area where going cheap would be a crap choice.

There are the MRE TP packs you can buy or diy.

Vacuum packing the Diy mre tp packets really reduces the volume they take up.

I keep checking updates here and always find interesting stuff, thanks guys.

I’ve recently re-thinked completely the gear I haul around and the way I do it, much because I felt the need to downsize EDC setup to an extent it wasn’t an hybrid BOB. It weighed me down a bit, and in an emergency situation being able to move fast and be agile is a value too. So I bought a Maxpedition Remora shoulder bag and made that my EDC bag, while the 32liters Maxpedition Condor II was setup as a proper BOB, and got the gear for that purpose. I bring it along for longer travels since it strikes such a nice balance of compactness and completeness.

I made a dedicated mechanical/electronic repair kit for the BOB, since I value the ability to make use of scavenged electronic gear, or repair vehicles.
Here a pic of the making of, contents were updated since then but so you see the size of it.

^ Nice changes to you system chenko. Have you carried the Remora shoulder bag much yet? That a good minimalist car kit. Sockets, open ends, screw driver, and pliers are for sure necessities for working on cars. What are the 2 items against the spine of the bag (one is green, the other dark grey)?

Thank you Racer and wolf359. Great advice that I will follow. Nice website Racer, best wishes on the success of the business. You should think about using a signature here and link to it.

I see I forgot my link the the rip stop nylon I plan on buying today. I think the dark green will be my choice of color.

Thank you!

Remora is proving a good choice so far (carried 2 months now).
It is comfortable thanks to the wide shoulder sling, it is heavy-duty made (to the extent it tends to be somewhat stiff) and carries the right amount of stuff for everyday tools, lights and basic survival gear leaving some extra space but remaining compact and convenient. It is a well balanced everyday bag, I’m happy with it.

The green thing is a cordless electric soldering iron, powered by three AA batteries, it heats up fast and proved useful.
The dark grey tube shaped item is a butane lighter with adjustable flame, it is good for some repair jobs on plastic, nylon, and heating up or burning stuff.

I have included now a tube of solder and a small roll of copper wick to remove solder, and other stuff.

Racer what types of ferro rods do you have always searching for good ones. I am from the United Kingdom by the way so i know any postage will be nasty.

Chenko nice tool kit how much does it weigh ? In my bug out vehicle i carry a Magliner sack truck on the roof rack, it has a 500lb capacity and the 10” pneumatic wheels make it reasonable on rough terran. Got it to scavenge car/truck/lorry batteries, you can stack several if you put old bits of carpet between them stops them sliding about to much even with webbing straps, carpet also doubles up to protect your back crawling under vehicles. We also have short straps so we can fix the carpet bits around our arms to protect from dogs, we expect dog packs to become a problem after about a week.

DIY Hammock & Rain Fly

Made my own hammock and it works great. Just a single for me, but it could easily be made larger with more material. For me I went to Joann Fabrics and bought 10 feet of rip stop nylon (in orange but they have a large variety of colors). Don’t remember the width offhand but it is wide enough that I can almost cocoon myself in it. Simply whipped the ends with 550 paracord and made a lashing out of 550 and good carabiners that have around a 600lbs+ weight load. The video(s) do a good job of showing you step by step. Buddy did the same thing and also made the bug net. The whole project cost me $17 and I’ve had it for over a year now.

Remora is an exceptional bag and extremely well made. Good choice. Couple of years ago I won a bid for one on Ebay at a really great price. Turned out they had mislabeled it and it was actually a Lunada which is basically the Remora with one pocket at the top. This has been my primary (portable) GHB since then due to the quality and that it pretty much carries what you’ll need.

I agree with you on staying as light as possible in case you need to take the shoe leather express. I always encourage people to take a walk with what they’ve packed to see exactly how it’s going to work for them. And then take into account that you may be ill or injured because of the incident.

Good job man!

I like your idea on the Magliner. And I agree with you on dog packs. We’ve been talking about that recently on another forum and I’ve been compiling the various stories folks are reporting:

Examples of why one should always be armed in the woods

How do you consider mobile high-protein snacks that keep themselves fresh (and nearby) until you shoot them, a “problem”?

Yes that’s politically incorrect today, but if the SHTF, IRL, you yourself may come to see “the easy meat” with different eyes.

Of course, if you refuse to arm yourself, well… Then I guess you’d be “the easy meat”… Even an accomplished marksman, with a well-tuned .44 Magnum, will find it hard to kill a dog sometimes.

Yeah, dogs can be a problem even now. I quit trying to jog around here because of them.

Good point about them being a source of protein in a shtf situation. Well, at least until you run out of ammo.

Thank DeputyDave. I watched those videos some time ago. They are pretty good. I should have posted a thank you in your thread.

Hope it helps

Wow, that is an impressive resource. So many books/document covering so many different survival and related topics. I'm going to copy some of those ebooks to a thumb drive to keep in my emergency pack. If I ever do find myself in a survival situation, there is some great reference material there. Stuff like edible and poisonous plants, how to make snares, etc. Thank you again for another great tip.

I keep copies of my archives on sandisk 32/64gb micro sdhc cards and use a 7” tablet to read them.

Glad ya’ll like the manuals

I’ve also added a section for water craft (kayaks, canoes and boats): Water Craft

We just bought a canoe so I’m pumped about getting out and using it with my son. Took him out on a friend’s kayak and he was loving it so we looked on Craigslist the same day and saw the canoe. Been having a blast on it. Now it’s opened up a whole new world of stuff to do!

Today I’m SO happy, I finally retrieved my long lost TEC accessories P7 suspension clip! Yay!! No more bulge in the front pocket of pants from carrying my EDC “tier #0” knife (which for quite some time it has been a fine Victorinox Farmer).

Together with a recent shift to a smaller AAA flashlight which I’m finally able to carry in the 5th pocket (DQG tiny AAA - 2 modes, neutral white) I am now in EDC nirvana as far as comfort goes!

I strongly advise such a simple but effective method to carry Vic knives or similar in the pocket.

That is such a cool idea, I never thought of it before seeing your post. I hate it when the keys bunch up at the bottom of my pockets. I went out to the garage and found a couple of those small thin wrenches that you get in the box when you’re building a bookshelf or whatever. I bent it over easy enough and it even had a little hole in the end of it. So now that is my ‘new’ DIY suspension clip

For grins I went to Ebay and saw they have them as cheap as .81 cents so I went ahead and ordered some to have on hand.

Thanks for the pics, that’s like the neatest thing since sliced bread

Yeah it’s a clever thing for us that actually really use pockets

I have read of people bending spoons and the like to make DIY pocket clips.

Also, the edcgear line of mini-tools comes handy if one wants to make use of clip presence to actually have another tool, such as a mini prybar and the like.

I’m writing for help in finding a suitable pack to replace my Maxpedition Condor II as a BOB pack. The condor is a good pack but, as with any of this kind of “assault” packs it presents some problems:

  1. Small-ish
  2. Un-supporting on the back (lacks rigidity)
  3. Center of gravity gets shifted backwards (BAD!) rather than upwards (good) because of design

Because of how the pack develops backwards, it is a pain to lug around when full, and mine got rather full although well organised (I know how to pack a pack). It just pulls you back.

I am looking for a pack that develops more upwards, but not an alpinism pack, which lacks organisation. Something on the lines of a military Bergen maybe?

I’m NOT a fan of external pouches, while I dig internal organizers and pouches. Outside I just want to attach the occasional tool (ax, spade, whatever).

Suggestions?
