For In a smoke enviroment, Spill is bad, the focus beam of the Survivor is what gives it the Smokecutter name. From what I understand, Streamlight runs that Emitter at a low current to keep temp down because that light is intended for extreme environments. If the light is generating a lot of its own heat, its not going to be able to shed that heat in a room thats over 300°. Firefighters like the Streamlight even though its bulky, it works, its tough, it turns on no matter the abuse. Its well protected and the research was done to give the firefighting community the light that was needed. Skillhunt or Fireflies has not done the testing, and I doubt many other brands out there would survive what our lights go through. Streamlight was active with Firefightes to develop that light.
Perhaps lumen choice depends upon the location. In a smoke filled building, an overly bright light might reflect back and blind the user, wouldn’t it? I am not a firefighter, but I’ve been in training situations during the day with the smoke in the room so thick you cannot see your own feet. And the gloves were thick enough to prevent burns if you grabbed a metal railing. A helmet mounted light might be the best solution there at night for the nozzleman because it took both hands to sweep the nozzle and it was really tiring work in the heat. No way could I mess with a flashlight. Glad we trained during the day!
Setting up a break line for a forest fire might allow a brighter light. But these guys know what has worked for others, so I defer to the experts.
So Streamlight is my new favorite EDC light that’s for sure. I love the fact that it will take either a cr123a battery or a AAA battery. It is extremely small and very bright
Also add that streamlight also often gives fire departments discounts. If it wasn’t for that our small funded by grants and donations volunteer dept couldn’t afford to outfit all of us with much needed lights. Having to share a light with 3 or even 2 guys gets real old real fast. Having to wait for a truck to arrive to have a light also gets real old. I was around when our dept started and can remember those days.
I think I`m starting to build up a little collection of right angle lights here, I just bought a Fireflies PL47G2, I have a manker E02 Mk1, 3x manker E02IIs, a Manker E03II and an E04, sofirn SP40 (18350) and an SP40 with the 18650 tube.
I only have one right angle, Manker E02… I recently bought the headband for it, after working on the heater in my car, trying to hold a light in my teeth (not ideal.)
I also bought a headband for my Atom AL, though it is not a right angle light…
Both the manker E02 and E03 are high cri!
the SP40 is a standard 16mm mcpcb so it`s a straight forward job to swap that out to whatever High cri led you want, I swapped out the LED in E04 (a slightly more difficult job as it has a non standard MCBCP). but for an Off-the-shelf High Cri light either the E02II or E03II will do
I’m thinking the strong point of angle lights is the unique kind of utility they provide. You’ve got the headlight option, and then the light can clip to a pocket, or pack strap, etc. I like the ability to have a small light that stands and directs light where I want. I see them as small directional lanterns and as handheld lights as needed. Maybe just a niche utility that not so many of us latch onto. They’re really cool and somewhat quirky little lights.
I just have 3. An Astrolux HL01. The Anduril UI is great …the light is really heavy though. Then there’s my Skillhunt HO3. Really like the size and the UI. Finally, my fav is a hybrid…a 16340 Rofis TR10…small flashlight, twist the top and I’ve got an angle light.
Now looking at the Fireflies PL47. Maybe add a 27100 light to the mix.
If you’re only going to carry one light it probably should be an angle light with a magnet, a clip and some sort of lanyard. No one is suggesting you only carry one light.
Iam also interested in these anglelights…what is in your opinion the best now on the market? 18650 or 21700 usb……Its interesting, that not many people mention them…
21700? Ugh. 18650 is about the limit, IMHO… if you’re going to use your angle light as a headlamp. But if handheld only, 21700 can work just fine. The NICE thing is you can clip it to your jacket or pants and have hands-free forward light without anything on your head.
There is no such thing as “best”. You can spend less than $20 or more than $120. Some are throwy some are almost all flood. Some go from very low moonlight to 4,000 lumens. Some have one LED some have four or more and sometimes three different colors (white, red, other) and options to have some that throw and some that are more floody. Some have multiple single LED options from the factory and some are just cold white. Some are basically permanently attached to the headband and some can easily be removed and add a clip or with some you can keep the clip on it all the time and have a deep carry clip and still put it in or out of the headband easily. Some come with a single headband and some come with the two-piece headband. Some come with micro USB or C or some sort of magnetic charging. And yes different battery sizes. Make a list of all of the items that are important to you and then start your search and you probably won’t find everything on your list in one light. Make the list first or you end up with major compromises.
FWIW… asking for “best” without qualifying a budget isn’t helpful at all. Because “best” is not only subjective, but also dependent upon how much you’re willing to spend.
They all have a maximum brightness. The budget is important but it should be the last thing on the list. If you can find something that meets all of your hard requirements, then you can rule them in or out based on budget and compromise.
Skilhunt H03 or H04. Great headlamps. NW tints available.
Sofirn makes a nice D25L on the cheap, but it’s not an angle light. If there’s an active discount coupon as before, price can get down to about $17. Twin LH351D emitters. Built-in recharging.
Otherwise, the Lumintop HL3A is a terrific angle light with 4000k emitter choices (Nichia 219C, SST-20) for a price just within your budget.
Maybe i wrote not correct.i dont want a headlamp.i wanted angle with rotating head.i just remember fenix, nitecore…maybe sofirn made them.i found some on banggood i go check them now
