Film classics written by John Hughes
I didn't know John Hughes wrote that many classics.
That's quite the résumé.
I stopped watching movies when everything became CGI, but isn’t it awesome that we’re all starring in ‘1984: the Documentary’ right now?
The clocks are striking thirteen.
Boaz, thanks for the list.
although i have seen short clips
of some, i have not watched any
of the complete movies on the list.
The Hitman’s Wifes Bodyguard, followed by Gamer.
I saw the 2014 movie, Whiplash.
It was okay, but I don’t understand the high praise. I mean, the acting was pretty good, but the movie itself was just about a kid who was decent at drums and then got better with practice. Oh, and his teacher was mean and abusive, and he went back to work with him after getting abused which was a big eye-roller.
I’d say spoiler alert, but it’s a movie about drumming and it’s from 2014.
I liked Whiplash, but I don't remember how much I liked it.
(Unfortunately, I didn't write a review of the film.)
Not easy movie. Heavy drama with very good Ulrich Thomsen role. 8/10
Brødre 2004
Don’t get fooled by American remake.
Saw “The Last Duel.”
Total.
Waste.
Of.
Time.
Such a tired old theme. Two knights. One is a misogynist, the other a hard scrabble warrior who marries the beautiful maiden. Then the misogynist takes interest… defiles her while the warrior is away. He comes back. She fills him in on what happened. Now the two are going to… wait for it…

DUEL IT OUT.
Directed by Ridley Scott? Uh…. wow. The acting absolutely sucks. Matt Damon? Adam Driver? Ben Affleck? What were these guys thinking? Driver actually put on a good performance. But there was no depth to the other two. Total waste of production money. The screenplay is such a tired theme. They could’ve done something different…
The new Matrix groan. Huge fan of the original (first one, anyway). Pretty good story but felt about an hour too long and almost no action.
Agreed was a struggle.
I also watched Ghostbusters Afterlife, actually really enjoyed it, and I saw the original in the cenema in 84.
Matrix Resurrections sucked. Honestly can’t believe I watched the whole thing start to finish.
Recently watched “Edge of Tomorrow”.
I can see why people liked it, but the whole thing might as well just have been a short film or a Black Mirror episode.
Another film I really enjoyed.
Oh nice! Huge ghostbusters fan. Now we just need a sequel to “The Last Starfighter”
The Crimson Pirate (1952)
I heard this was one of the better swashbuckler movies out there and I decided to give it a shot since I like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). This movie isn’t awful, it’s just lacking by today’s standards. The action is basically just physical comedy and the whole thing feels like a stage play in terms of production quality. I finished it and didn’t feel cheated for renting it…
Oh! There is a scene where the main character uses a capsized boat underwater as an air-pocket to walk to shore on the sea floor. Sound familiar? I’m 99% sure that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl contained an intentional reference to this as a nod to a previously loved pirate swashbuckler film. Pretty neat find, I think.
I mean, it could have been a webisode but I didn’t think it felt over-long. And it would have looked cheap if they did that. Either way, the end product is pretty much it’s own thing. It takes concepts from the original story but it’s a pretty loose adaption.
The story started life as a Japanese light novel. There is a non-illustrated book adaption available for anyone who doesn’t appreciate anime-like artstyles and just wants to get the original story. You’ll find that the Hollywood version is dumbed-down a bit (big surprise) but that they did it in a tasteful way that translated to a more believable story for a life-action movie. For example, they opted to have exo suits in the movie instead of full-body power armor.
BTW, the audiobook is only 5hrs and 25 minutes long and well narrated.
Even with the trailer of “Matrix Resurrections,” it felt like this was going to fall short of the initial trilogy.
It’s amazing how much money is wasted in the movie business these days…
Btw, I’ve really enjoyed Black Mirror, especially the USS Callister episode.
Ghostbusters Afterlife looks really interesting and what a cast lineup. Great how they’ve got Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver.
I also agree, a sequel to “The Last Starfighter” has potential. It’ll be tricky… as the tendency for movie makers in sci-fi is to go overboard on SFX and not much on story. I think they could start it off with Centauri coming back to find Alex Rogan… who Maggie had left for an alien prince that seduced her (using devious means—she’s under mind control), and returned to Earth only to sink into despair working some menial job. The Rylan Star League defense force rebuild appeared successful but unbeknownst to everyone has a corruption to a critical piece of technology that was provided by a compromised alien contractor secretly working for a dangerous alien force created by the evil Xur. Xur amassed a new armada of alien craft, controlled by genetically engineered pilots that are biomechanically bonded with the ships. Grig had discovered that vulnerability to the Frontier, told Centauri about it… and when he tried to alert Enduran’s tech council about it, was intercepted by one of Xur’s spies. With Grig now missing, Centauri suspected the council is corrupt and decided it was time to find Alex Rogan, to help him get to the bottom of this. Something like this…
That was one of my favorite Black Mirror episodes.
Mine too. There are some duds, like that Miley Cyrus one… but some great ones. I hope they can keep it going. It’s just so painful having to wait so long between episodes.
