My high school had a gun rack! At the start of every semester, the principal made an announcement. If you brought your gun to school, drop it off at his office so he could lock it up for it's protection. You could pick it up at lunch or after school.
Our Navy ROTC drill rifles started out as fully functional 03A3's. Next year they took out the firing pins. Next year they brined pins into the barrels. Our rifle team had 03A3's converted to 22 cal (damn heavy). I was 7th in the nation (including regular Navy). Two other of our team members were 1st and 2nd.
When Janet Reno was on her oooh-thats-too-scary-looking-for-peons kick, I bought at least one of every weapon that ole' shaky lady wanted to ban (and at least one of every caliber AR known to man or small furry animal).
I'm still kicking myself for not buying that .50BMG... the guy would only sell it with the several thousand rounds of ammo that he had (at less the $1 a round!). I was moving at time and didn't want to schlepp a few tons of ammo. It shot "meaningful groups" at over a mile... definition of "meaningful group"... smaller than your head.

As for ammo, I have Federal HST for both my 9 and .40. Got good reviews, and it shoots, so I'm sticking with it.

You nailed it . The tip keeps the cavity from getting plugged with debris & also helps with proper expansion.
