Emisar D3AA is available now

Indeed. Clemence has hinted that he wanted to make many-emitter E21A boards. These could be used to build a flooder like that.

For flood + throw there’s nothing suitable on the horizon. And there’s a number of problems with it…

  • CSP array seems like the most natural option but CSP emitters don’t throw well
  • Non-CSP emitter in the middle will cause the light to suffer from donut hole in intermediate beam (but probably not full flood)
  • cooling large arrays of CSP emitters ain’t easy. DTP would likely help but to be done well it needs drivers that regulate on the positive side
  • when driving the central emitter separately, trace resistances are an issue, limiting the possible array density

Any Ozzie receive KR4 yet?

im very tempting

Was thinking about that too - multi-LED aspheric, or simply adding an aspheric in place of the glass for the mule lights Hank proposes. Not sure if there would be a gain or loss though for the extra cost.

Here is how the mule beam is like, no hot spot, pure flood.
(For demonstration purpose only, actual mule in the GIF is Noctigon M43.)

ETA on E21A versions, and which CCTs will be available?

Nichia factory is affected by the virus issue, I’m afraid we are not sure when the E21A LED will be available.

Or a Nitecore destroying 21700 mule with 10 or more LED’s!

And one thing that would be interesting with LES that is huge relatively to lens size - very strong Fresnel lenses. Would produce a notably narrower beam (IMHO much more useful) and short zoom travel would compromise cooling only slightly.

How come 4 x XPL 5K makes more lumens than 4 x SST20 5K, but 8 x XPL 5K makes less than 8 x SST20 5K?

Where did you see that? The IOS page and posts here have me totally confused. I can only guess at what it all means since important facts are being left out.

For example, the IOS page for the D4S2 has only one # for the XPL HI, but he offers the XPL HI in V2 and V3, so they can't be the same??

Is the "L3" the 5000K or 6500K SST-20? I see on the spec sheet a 5000K LED is available in L2 or L3, and the 6500K available in L3 or L4.

Hank lists the cooler SST20’s as slightly less powerful than the XPL’s on the regular D4V2.

Me Too! I emailed Hank the min I saw this but my order had already shipped . Now I’m thinking about selling something to justify another light.

One possible explanation is the SST-20's draw lower voltage, so for a higher qty of LED's on just one single cell, the lower voltage LED's should result in drawing even higher amps per LED. 4 to 8 LED's may result in jumping over the threshold of giving the 5000K SST-20's the advantage.

SST-20 is also more efficient at moderate currents but less efficient at higher.

They pretty much all are, so as you increase LED count off a single cell, efficiency goes up and amps/LED goes down because of increasing batt resistance, LED wire resistance if still using one pair of wires, etc. But then again you got all that heat concentrated...

with all this 8 led mule talk… how long can it run at max?

I love the one trick stuff but I am getting more and more into sustainable high output…

I’m not talking about the change of efficiency but the change of relative efficiency.
At low-medium current SST-20 is more efficient than XP-L HI. At high current XP-L HI is more efficient than SST-20.

Perhaps like .. 5 seconds?

I would have thought 2 secs max. My D4V2 drops like a rock at turn on.

My D4v2 can maintain even 30seconds of turbo on fresh 30Q, there is no dropping like a rocket.
