Anyone sampled this wide reflector light at DX?

Its SKU:134427 for the single 18650 and 134429 for the 2 cell version. Im after a throwing XM-L and this one is by far my favourite design ive seen yet since its designed for the 1865 rather than the 2665. The reflector is listed as 58mm for the single cell and 60mm for the 2 cell so im not sure if one of those is wrong. Ive had my eye on a HD2010 for a while now but im not comfortable with the thickness of the barrel. Personally id get the single cell version. Anyone got any comments to make on it or have seen any discussion?

Welcome to the BLF family, Shriker!!

I have one of these as does Kramer5150 and Viffer750 and it’s a great little light once you take care of a couple small issues. It’s design is either love it or hate it and we that have it love it. It throws nearly as well as the HD-2010, is crazy comfortable to hold, and is very small all things considered. A simple driver mod (move a wire from one large pad to another large pad) will bump output to over 3.5A.

Here is a thread about the light: click here

You can get it on ebay a lot quicker and cheaper - $23

Aha perfect! Now i know the real name of the beast too. Thats an excellent review you have of it and ill be going thru it all closely but it looks like this is my next buy, just have to check out the various clones that have been found. Cant beat a wee bit of modding can you? Thanks for the welcome too

Welcome to BLF, Shriker!

It sounds like you have the bug too  Here you are among those equally smitten.
I hope you have fun here - I do

One of my fave lights. GREAT cigar holder! This is the light that that replaced my ~4-5 year old SF-6P + Malkoff + 18650 mod setup on my ~3 mile night jog.

Welcome aboard, Shriker!

I would like to recommend the UK ebay, here you can buy much cheaper this light, if you are lucky

Make sure to get the eBay version, Shriker. The MXDL does not have the easily modded driver like the eBay version does. Besides that, it’s cheaper, too.

Thanks guys, ive never heard of that character Raccoon! I took my name from Dan Simmons Hyperion books way back. I noticed one of those ebay listings went last nite for £6.50 which is just a pip over $10, seems very cheap to me but surely worth a punt in any case.

x2… mine is the MXDL version and It was very under-driven. I gutted the OEM driver and replaced with a 2.8A 7135 driver. Note also that this light has a poorly designed switch pill. I had to fix that too.

After the mods, its now very (VERY) close in output to my 3.5A modded HD2010. This light surprised a lot of CPF’ers at a recent night hike.

Hah CPF night hike :stuck_out_tongue:
I love going out on my bike on dark nights possibly just for the pleasure of using my lights, i could never admit that anywhere else :stuck_out_tongue:
I live in the middle of nowhere in the countryside so lights are required here, yes even 3 XM-Ls in my pocket.
Is the HD2010 still a slightly better thrower than this one at the same output?

Welcome Shriker. You can admit anything around here HeHe!

The original manufacturer for this torch is not actually skyray - they offer lights which are often named/cloned from others supplier. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for this light as for the Skyray STL-V2 is actually Maxtoch in China.

Maxtoch makes lights to high spec for police/military/sports use around the world and this little XML is one of theirs. It began to appear under various names not long after Maxtoch introduced this new model last year. I guess some cheaper ones will be clones driven/kitted to lower spec, and some will be rebranded Maxtochs. Here’s the light:

http://maxtoch.com/news/62-ta6x6.html

and the Maxtoch original on sale from Maxtoch via ali Baba. Good company to deal with.

In the original Maxtoch spec its a good grunty little XML - not quite as bright or as tight in the beam as the Maxtoch SN6X-2 (aka Skyray STL-V2), but a fine little 100m hunter.

You know the OP is from CPF when he’s naturally afraid to post links.

Heh, its funny cause its true :stuck_out_tongue:
This place isn’t tainted by advertising greed.

The fever came over me again last night!!!, I bid for one on ebay yesterday, and won it!!
Shriker and johnnymac, I blame you……

What did you pay for yours? I got mine for £9 ($14) delivered. The old familiar wait continues. Looking forward to tinkering with its innards.

£8.00 delivered, lol.

first impressions…….

Very well packed, although the bezel was wider than the box making a bulge that would be possibly be prone to knocks with rough handling.
At first glance, well made, tail cap had very smooth lubed threads, bezel was loose, assemblers hadn’t bothered to screw it right home.
Tail cap action isn’t very smooth, and “fussy” going through the modes.
I like the big reflector, popped a batt in for a quick look at the beam, it seems pretty good in daylight, so I’ll take it to work tonight for a test, but the bezel is too big for a comfortable ENC on the hip, but of course, it was an impulse buy, and never intended for work.
It was a bit smaller than I thought, but no probs.
Just before typing this, I was looking at the ebay ads, and realised that I could have got A 2 cell version for the same price …. s**t!!!.
So the fever struck again, my other half is going to bid for a 2 cell for me tonight, lol.
