Electric shavers

Let's talk electric shavers. :)

Right now I use a Philips Norelco 8140XL (a 2005 model)...

...but I want to buy something better. (This one doesn't cut my coarse neck hairs very well.)

I have done a lot of research and I'm thinking of getting either a Philips Norelco Speed 8240 (a 2008 model)...

...or maybe a Philips Norelco Powertouch with Aquatec Electric Razor AT830/41 (a 2012 model).

As you can see, I have a thing for Norelco shavers.

Most people use traditional razors, but I want to hear your recommendations/thoughts on electric shavers.

Previously had a Panasonic wet and dry shaver, but I forgot the model number. Bought it around 2005 and it lasted a good five years and a bit. What killed it was the battery as it wasn’t charging at all. Otherwise, there’s a good chance I would still be using it.

Fast forward to today and I’m using a Braun 720-3s. I was initially hesitant on the new shaver as I preferred wet shaving, but the Braun certainly does its job really well. I’ve had it for around 18 months going to two years and the little light that tells me I need to change the foil hasn’t come on yet.

I used to use Norelco electric shaves and after going though several models I eventually switched to Braun (don’t recall model number).

None of the electric razors cut as close as I like however. I use an electric razor first and then go over my face afterward with a standard razor. I don’t have to be as careful and worry about nicks since the electric razor has taken off the majority of the hair.

I use an electric too. It’s just a lot more convenient, quicker, and I end up saving money with how expensive razor cartridges have been. Norelco has been all I have used though I may try a Panasonic next time I purchase. I usually wait for crazy sales around the holidays and so I don’t spend that much on them. My most recent razor was the SpeedXL 8240 which I got on sale for $40 last fall. Honestly, for me the cheaper, more basic 7340 actually shaved better. However, every guy has such a different face and whiskers that it may be different for everyone. I haven’t tried the new high end models so no idea how those would be for me. I won’t ever spend more than $40 on a razor so I wait for the old models to get cheap after a couple years before I buy. AT830 looks to use the same heads as the 7340 so its probably the same shaver with a couple of new features. I would guess it will go quite bit cheaper than the current price if you can be patient and keep an eye out for 24 hour sales, etc.

I had one of Braun’s old top of the line models with silver plastic housing from before they started with the whole BMW-esque 3- 5- 7- series thing. It didn’t have the spider web like foil the new ones use but I bought one of those as a replacement at one time and it made it shave better I think although with some tendency to hang up on my skin now and then. It was superb but the battery died after maybe 5 years. Then I got a cheaper Philips one in colourful plastic with the three rotating shaving heads. It has a nice trimmer on it that does not bite your skin, but I am not a fan of the Philips three-head system. Now I’m using a panasonic with a two-row head much like the old Braun and it is pretty good, a calm sound and it can be rinsed clean with water and also be used for wet shaving. After buying it in a local store I found out it could be had for half the price at amazon

Hi, I bought the AT891 a few months ago. I`m happy with it, especially because this is hte first electric shaver that shave wet.
When using it dry, it cuts better than my previous shaver, which I used for more thatn 10year… also a Philips.
The reason why I choose this over the bit cheaper “dry-only shaver” was that this only took 1 hour to recharge, rather than 8 hours.

I recommend this Panasonic ES-LA63-S

I have the same issue (coarse facial hair) and have been using an old school Gillette safety razor (single blade, double edged, top loading) for years now. It seems to be the only thing that works and doesn’t clog up. I haven’t tried an electric for years because of this, but if they have improved enough I wouldn’t mind having one at work for those mornings when I don’t have time for a scrape.

I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

Im still using Philips philishave tracer 2 head type. not a battery powered one. My friend give it to me. I think its more than 15 years old. still work like charm.

Doesn anyone know what type battery used in rechargeable shavers mentioned above ?

Exact same story here, had a very expensive Norelco but it just didn’t cut close enough, switched to Braun and was much happier…but afterwards I quickly go over it while in the shower with a basic razor and no shaving cream…works super well, is cheap and fast…just like I prefer my women.

As said in another thread: “old is gold”.

I have a generic Braun 5000-something. Has lasted now at least 5 years, battery powered.

Is there any real world difference with those circular blade shavers compared to basic ones?
Never tried one with rotating blades, cannot comment but what do you guys think?

Seriously, electric sucks, doesn’t get nearly close enough for me with my thick facial hair and pulls and tugs too much. I use a Fusion to shave but have been looking at this http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/ for when my blades run out, they look good and are cheap.

I like these:

I just stopped shaving ten months ago. :santa:
Haven’t looked back first wife doesn’t like
it but after 47 years could care less :santa:

I just ordered another Panasonic ES8243A from Newegg after the last one I purchased in 2004 and used every single day finally gave up the ghost yesterday, the problem was the electronic switch. This is my third Panasonic in about 20 years and couldn’t be happier.

I opened my Panasonic while trying to fix the electronic switch and can tell you that The Panasonics use a 14500 Li-ion battery with funky looking terminals and waterproof silicon seals on the + side.

I think mine also uses a 14500 battery, that’s what I’ve read in the specs. Mint is the Philips 891

So true. They irritate my face and they are noisy and get warm on my face. The wet shawers are the same. Plus I can do a full shave a lot faster with a razor than with an electric and I am not the patient type.

But you can seriously extend the life of your blades by taking a few easy steps.

1: Try to shave after your shower/bath. It will clean your face before the shave and that is important because your blades do not become dull. They become dirty! That's right. Its not your coarse facial hairs that make edge of the surgical steel blades bent or worn or dull. It's the slow build up of grime and calcium + soap deposits. Taking a shower first will also soften your hairs and moisten your skin and reduce irritation.

2: Clean your blades after use. Rinse under hot water. Then inspect. From time to time you can clean them with household cleaning solutions you already have and use for cleaning of the bathroom.

With the above steps I've been able to extend the life of a single razor to 5 months. But it does require that you stop believing you need aloe vera and natural oils in a little strip across the top of your razor. If your face requires this then apply after shaving.

3: This costs a little but it is worth it IMHO - The razor pit. It is a little "sharpener" for your blades. It doesn't really sharpen your blades much since the sharpener bit it is made of a soft silicon plastic but it works. With this and the above 2 steps I am down to 2 - 3 blade changes a year. I sometimes have to change the blades after travelling since they get knocked about in the suitcase.

I’ve had problems with shaving for my whole life. No matter how sharp the blade, I can only shave a 2+ day stubble. Otherwise it pulls terribly.

I bought a Panasonic foil type shaver, after owning a Remington and Norelco rotary type. It only seemed OK. THEN, I tried it in the shower. I can shave everday without tearing my skin. I swear, with a little effort I can shave as close as razor with no irritation. Admittedly, I do use a razor to clean up my neck a little, but I’ve never been able to shave everday and now I can.

Shower shaving with electric shaver using bar soap - works great!

I have a pair of Braun 7526's .

after you break the drop in charger foamy cleaning unit...at about day 20 ..it's a great razor just throw away the big dumb alkward guarenteed to break self cleaning thing which uses expensive colored water and alcohol ..

Blows away the triple spinning head norelco razors which are being made cheaper and cheaper//china /

Braun ..made in germany ...about 150$ back in the day
