Budget Light Criteria

I know this can be very subjective, but at what price do you think a light is no longer considered “Budget Light”? Take for example the new K40 versus the TN31…can you consider the K40 a “budget light”? Or the HD2010 versus the Shadow JM26, very similar in looks, the Shadow at $56… is price the only major consideration as being a ‘budget light’?

On the other hand, what can you consider as a good “value for money” item?

I think it varies. It could be good value for the money. It’s always at least that.

In many cases it’s probably limited by a certain dollar amount as well.

Regarding this forum you can discuss any light of course.

If someone isn’t into lights and just wants a good “budget” light they probably don’t want a “budget” $100 light that is similar to a $200 light. If you are “into” lights that all bets are off.

In other words, this question can’t really be answered.

This forum was originally created & populated because CPF would only allow discussion of pricier lights (>$50-100 for led + some simple alum bits and electronics, are you kidding me?), so “budget” basically came to mean anything not associated with that atmosphere.

So basically this forum was as offshoot of a rather ‘unpopular’ policy with an eye towards lesser-priced lights in the beginning. However, I noticed this forum has spun-off into a free-wheeling type of ‘idea-exchange’ center (with flashlights as the main backdrop). Nice, nice atmoshere here in BLF, (as long as you don’t offend someone, of course). I’m relatively new here in BLF (in fact I’m ‘enrolled’ earlier on the other side than here). It’s nice to know some bit of history, don’t you think?

Yeah. What Gc and Hex said. But what I really really like is that you can link to stores, products, pictures and so on. Of course sp@m (paisley as it has come to be known here) posts are frowned upon and stopped. But short of that no probs with the limky's and what good is html/www if that is not allowed?

The aspect that a 8 dollar light can spawn a 400 posts long thread and no one is bashed because they hate the light or love the light is wonderful.

That a lot of the expensive brands have their own reviews here with great pictures, writeups and video here is just a wonderful addition. But 20 dollar lights often gets the same treatment :-) Here a good product will get rave reviews regardles of price or brand and I love that. Also I like it that a certain amount of off topic banter is not discouraged. That makes 90% of the friendly atmosphere here if you ask me. Just like it does in real life conversations.

Ledsmoke, that’s true, it should be regardless of price…I enjoy my lights/chargers/cells as much as reading the posts here!

I agree that it’s really more about value than budget in most cases, as seen in this other thread about most expensive lights.
