Not much of a mod but I like it better than the black.
Had this 2D maglite about 12 years and have just upgraded it to an LED bulb and got rid of the black anodising.
Going to get a new glass lens for it too.
I also need if they are available a new rubber for the switch as mine has cracked and perished.
After stripping, would there need to be a clear coat applied to prevent oxidation of the now shiny exposed aluminum OR does the original anodizing (minus its black coloring) still protect?
The anodizing process is first to oxidize the surface, then stain that oxidized layer. For the best shine, I would take it all off, buff and then maintain the buffed aluminum. Coating it, i believe would detract from the beauty of it. Of course if you want it maintenance free then you would want to clear coat it. Keep in mind that it is difficult to get a coating to adhere to a highly polished surface.
Only polished to get the shine with autosol. the caustic takes all the ano off.
I find if you leave it in the caustic for about 5 mins then just use a small paint brush to brush the ano off and leave it for another 5 mins takes it off completely.
A swill under the tap dry off and polish with autosol.
