fast review of the Lumintop Tool AAA

I really like lights with clicky switches and I really like lights that run on a single AAA, and there way too few flashlights with both. I have been eyeing the Lumintop Tool AAA for quite a while, and when I saw a good price on Banggood (I payed $15.08 shipped with coupon BLF), I went for one. I like it, and thought you would like to read a bit about this light too, so here's a quick review .

I got it in today (ordered june 4, took just 8 days to arrive Smile ) and it looks and feels like a decent quality light, nice matt black anodising, firm clicky, purple AR-coated lens, good output, three modes med-low-high-no memory, PWM-controlled modes, frequency between 500 and 1000Hz, nice beam with distinct hotspot, clip can be reversed, etc. etc. Really nice! And unlike what's on the package and the Banggood website, the led is XP-G2 Smile . (Selfbuilt over at CPF did a review of this light last december, his version had the old XP-G, two modes, no PWM, different OP-reflector, no AR-coating was mentioned. So my unit is a new version, even the Lumintop website is not updated with the new specs). Oh, and this one runs fine on an Efest 10440 li-ion battery.

This is what you get, specs are on the package, I did not measure the output or anything, the claims sound very plausable so I'm pretty sure it is about correct, perhaps even a bit better with updated led and AR-coating. I will measure some output numbers on AA and 10440 later, and add it to this post. EDIT: lumen measurements are in post #2

It is not the tiniest of the AAA flashlights, but a clicky switch just takes up some length:

It comes apart effortlessly, no glue or anything, it is completely moddable, the driver board is 11mm diameter.

Eventually it will be modded, but I'm happy with it sofar Smile , hope you like it too.

It is dark now so I did some lumen measurements (ceiling bounce method). On a Duracell alkaline I get med28lm-low5lm-high96lm, on an Efest 10440 I get med116lm-low41lm-high287lm. So the output seems to have improved compared to the old specs (high on an alkaline 96lm compared to 70lm), and the Tool has nice numbers on a li-ion too Smile .

287 lumen on an Efest 10440 IMR is what you usually get with these drivers: when they do not have to boost, it goes direct drive (with lower modes by PWM) and if the resistances in the electrical path from battery to emitter are not too bad the output gets towards 300 lumen. The cheap Ultrafire M5 does 300 lumens as well on the 10440 IMR (but is just 1 mode).

I did not know that I would get the updated version, that was nice, but what I liked about the old version is that the low mode was current-controlled with no PWM.

That is a pity. (I like to think it has something to do with this review of course, finally gives me the idea that I have an influence somewhere in the world, if only the stock supply of Banggood UndecidedUndecidedWink)

Thanks for the post sir!! I don’t think there are many reviews on it, I’ve being thinking about it for a real good while but the conflicting info were confusing me quite a bit. Some sites displayed it as a 3 mode but I was only aware of the older 2 mode version. I’m glad to see the improvements made, just wished the PWM was kept out and the firefly was kept in this version. Thanks again!!

“Clicky”

Thanks for the suggestions gentlemen! The one from HKEquipment is not the older version. I was about to buy it, but wanted some confirmation, so I sent a e-mail to them and as far as I understood the Lumintop Tool they have is the newer 3 mode version.

ohaya

I’ll try the e-bay store you suggested, I’ll report back.

Thanks again!!

I like shapes with smooth curves.

But, it’s the XP-G2 version?

Hi,

The light at the link in the OP now (for the clicky version) is available. The BG page says:

Quote:
Free ShippingtoUnited States via Standard Shipping 7-20 business days

The page still says “XP-G R5” though….

The page said XP-G R5 when i bought the light from the OP, but still it was XP-G2. It would be sneeky of BG if they subsequently would sell an old batch.

I PM’d Neal. The special he advertised on our BLF today with coupon code is for the older 2 mode version. From Selfbuilts review on it, it can be used as a clicky, or a twisty from the head or tailcap Smile Also, another user said if u do half presses on the clicky you can toggle the modes! Hoo-Yah!

IMO that is sneaky, he did not say that and it is a relevant thing with a new version available and already sold by BG! The new version has XP-G2, more output and a nice AR-coating on the lens, I think it is the better one. The only thing that is nicer about the old one is that it does not seem to use PWM on the low mode.

May I ask you where is the coupon? I looked over here but couldn’t find it. I need to buy it whether from a person (not a store or company) or really cheap because of customs. Whenever I think I’ve found the 2 mode version it ends up being the newer 3 mode one.

Yep, that is sneaky if it indeed is the old model. I already bought one, hoping to get the new 3-mode version.
They also link to this review in their product description of the light – which leads people to believe that they might be getting the same light that is in the review.

Howdy sir. Yes, I would prefer the new one also but I want the moonlight from the old one! Yours still doing ok on the 10440, hasn’t gone POOF yet?

I think that all of this stuff about old version vs. new version, and which one BG was “on sale” is the main reason I haven’t jumped on this. I am so confused at this point about this “deal”…

I agree, it’s confusing. Maybe this will make it simpler?

If you want the old version (2 mode), use this: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/33282#comment-655508

If u want the newer 3 mode, try this: http://www.hkequipment.net/index.php?sp=&p=6&cat2=174&cat1=64&cat0=1&id=...

or maybe someone is sure of a Banggood link for the newer version?
