The Dutch miller in France

Hello!

In case of TL-DR Thanks for all the nice information on this forum, I am a Dutch guy living in south west France in an old watermill, hence the nickname
.

.

.

.

After reading so much on this forum - very helpfull, thanks a lot - I wanted to join you guys.

We moved from Amsterdam to the south west of France coming March two year ago.

We live in an old watermill, the foundations and some parts of the house have been here for about 1000 years (no I did not add a 0 by misstake ;)).
The idea is to build a waterwheel and make our own electricity, but a lot of work needs to be done befaore that happens

Let me give you a rough idea on why I want some flashlights.
Lets start with an bird eyes view with some lines drawn into them for a general idea of distances:

Green line is 100 meter (sorry, we are kind of used to and fixated on the metric system) and reaches the edge of the neighbours barn.
Red is 50 meter from the place we usually reside in to the corner of the public road that ends at our personal area.

and

green lines represent 20 meter
red is 30 meter
blue is 50 meter

It all started for me when somebody on a Dutch Tech/ICT website worte a series of blogs about flashlights.

The ultra cheap flashlights we have now hardly shine and I use the LED flash of my cell phone a lot.
But it got me thinking, I really need some decent lights.

For example, in the winter, the river runs wild and the waterlevel rises about 1 meter. This results in a millcreek filled with water that runs through our house. This is very nice, romantic and cool, but when a piece of wood get stuck behing the waterlock just beneath the bedroom of my son it bangs against the wooden waterlock and needs to be removed. Murphys law stated this will happen at night and sure it does most of the time.

The water is rushing and an expensive torch it out of the question, when dropped it will be carried away by the stream.

Then compared to the peacefull very little backyard of 32m2 we had in Amsterdam with some robins, pigeons and our cat to rule it all, the 40.000m2 we got now holds some interesting nature. Foxes, deer and wild boar use the place where our mill stream connects to the river as a drinking place. I ve seen snakes about 1.5 meter long and in the river live rodents, the size of a beaver, with narrow tails (bever rat is the Dutch word, is it coypu/nutria?) who are not afraid of people at all.

One of the places where snakes really like to spend their time in winter is in the hole where the water meter and main water supply is

We live near a vibrant town, but the road leading to our house has no public lighting and the two houses closest to us are without people living there, making the closest neighbour about 500 meter away.
This is fine, but without a moon it can get pretty dark.

So reading about flashlights and taking the above into consideration.

I wanted a very long flashlight, so I will be able to poke and to give me the feeling of securety. So I ordered a flashlight that is about the size of a baseballbat. It was cheap but even the expensive brands (I remembered the old Maglites that the US police used, oh man i was looking for something like that) do not offer what I wanted.

As a complete newby on the subject I ordered another torch from the same seller with idiotic (i know now) specs, and was very happy it came with a 18650 cell and a charger (and again Captain Hindside here).

I posted my orders in reply to the blog the Dutch guy had written and he was very clear, waste of money i should haveā€¦.orā€¦ā€¦
Hmm, I was reading a lot about it and found the 18650 cells filling some other needs I have. (powerbanks for cell phones)

Also I saw a lot of very nice looking flashlights in the real budgetrange and could not believe all are going to be crappy.

The Dutch guy who wrote the blogs gets Olight flashlights from Gearbest and heavily promotes them. My experience with Gearbest is that as long as you see them as working best in the lowest gear it can be acceptable but do not expect anything more or get very annoyed by the slowness.

Also I read and read and was stunned by the acceptance of the exaggerated specs. That is not right.
So being a great fan of Aliexpres i had some converations with my son of 11 about the subject.
We are planning on starting a youtubechannel centered about the theme play (playing computer games for example)
Playing in the dark night with flashlights seems like something we can also do there.
And away we went.

I ordered a whole bunch of flashlights that we just liked a lot by the looks of them.
Before ordering some of them I contacted the seller to pin him/her on specific specs (like, can it illuminate at 100 meter?) to pin them.

Of course gettng a bit wiser from reading I ordered a Nitecore D4 and Xtar charger and real decent Panasonic protected cells to lay a solid foundation.
I added a genuine Convoy C8 to the mix as a reference.

Sorry guys, spending 30+ on a flashlight does not sound likely for me right now.
Compared to cars, yes i know a Rolls will offer me a better experience then our Citroen C4 will, it is just not worth it for me. I can enjoy a Grimbergen dark beer a lot, and knowing the taste of a Westvleteren 12 (the Holy Grail of beers according to some) both have their moments for me. Still, if I am in Belgian at a store that sells special beers, nowadays I much more prefer to score some local beers instead of the Westvleteren.

Also, I really like the idea of a torch being a collection of part rather then 1 product.
So from my point of view I can not lose now.

1 I will have a lot of fun reviewing all the torches that are coming our way (win)
2 Torches that are bad wont cost me money thanks to the dispute syste of Aliexpres (no lose, and with some 3xAAA battery holders the not that good lights transform into nice presents for the friends of my son, win)
3 Torches with nice housing present a nice possibility to replace the LED, driver to create a really nice light and educational options (learning to solder for me and my son)

It is stange how this flashlight thing creeps up, I am talking to Simon of Convoy to make me a very nice C8.
And today after Gearbest was so slow on sending keeppower cells i cancelled that order and offered them to send me a Sunwayman instead. (looks and specs seens ideal for my wife)

So well, congrats if you made it this far, let me finish with one more note, I laughed really hard and used some jokes from the daily joke topic.

Hi and welcome The Miller. You have an interesting story and I'm sure theres much more to it. Enjoy your stay.

Welcome fellow dutchman!

Let me guess? Tweakers? :stuck_out_tongue:

bienvenue chez les freres des lumieres

Hey thanks and merci

And Thijs I am the Silent7 guy on tweakers indeed

Welkom op BLF, vanuit je oude woonplaats

That is a nice place you've got over there, and (unlike over here) lots of reasons and opportunities to have lots of flashlights around .

Welcome to BLF, you have an extraordinarily beautiful home.

Bedankt and thanks!

Yes the need for some torches is there.
And I really like the idea of being able to mod these things
For people who do not know, Tweakers is a website geared at computer enthousiasts.
People there rather build their own and with the trends going into the direction of replacing instead of repairing and thus more and more people thinking about goods as a whole instead of a combinations of parts I am happy to have found this!

Welcome to the forum. Get yourself a soldering iron and start turning those cheap lights into bright ones.

Wow! What a picturesque and timeless setting to play with flashlights! Glad to have you! Enjoy your time here.

Thanks for signing up, The Miller!

Welcome to BLF and France.

I also moved into a very old, relatively isolated house with no public lighting not far from where you are (in Creuse), my closet nerdy flashlight hobby when i lived in Paris proved very usefull and practical here.

Hello ā€œThe Millerā€ , welcome.

What a lovely place to live.

Oh la la, what a warm welcome, thanks all.
Looking forward to discus all the cheap torches that are underway with you.

what a lovely thread this has become.

i thoroughly enjoyed the OP.

Greetjes! (Sorry my dutch is Englutch at bestā€¦)

Good Day The Miller,

Welcome to BLF.

Btw, LOVE your home in France.

Looking forward to your experiences.

Best Regards,

George

And today a couple of ordered things arrived

These are the lights I ordered:

The starter of the streak of orders, I will be happy if the LED produces some light, because the lenght and shape of this torch is the main reason for buying it.

.

Oh rooky me, feeling glad this one has a 18650 and charger included when I ordered it. I will test it and if not good (probably :() not use these. I do not expect a lot from the light but hey, it adds to the play and test fun.

.

We like the looks and build-in diffuser of this strange zoomie

.

A C8 clone with cheap LED probably nice foundation for some modding.

.

A standard Concoy C8 as reference for testing of the rest.

.
*
And a brownish thingy with zoom

.

another golden skywolfeye for grabs

.

Our absolute favorite when it comes to looks of all I ordered is this skywolfeye

.

A pattern emerges, we like the brownish/bronze color over the military looking black ones

.

Nice color on the housing of this light

.

SkyRayKing, looks like a little monster, had to order one

.

we liked the looks and size of this skywolfeye

.

This one I ordered for 14.44, I really like the magnet and rotatable light head

.

Nice little thing with magnet and i like the LEDtrip on the side

.

Very cheap skywolfeye
Got this model twice, they both are planned to be given als gift to friends of my son (brothers so no problems posed by different torches  of course with a triple AAA cell holder.

.

Skywolfeye, only $8.09 when i ordered it

.

Skywolfeye for the looks

.

A small one in strange colors from skywolfeye

.

MECO zoomie, just liking the looks of it

.

Convoy C8 with T6-4C LED, 1 group low/mid/high because I wanted a warmer tint and like the fact that Simon offers these options (so also like to support him)

This one came today, along with some 18650s and powerbanks that can charge them.
So we could start playing with it for a first impression.
Pro so far: Feel is nice, light is bright, modes work correct, funny to see the LED shape appear when zoomed, overal very nice looking thingy
Drawbacks: plastic lens, no memory, LED and driver are hold into the light by rings, but I could not unscrew these, tailswith on inside is hold into the metal tail by plastic, no ring to unscrew here.
If I had not read anything about flashlights I would have wondered over the brightness and the different mode options. The drawbacks would not have seem like drawbacks then, so ignorance is indeed bliss
It is a nice way to start experiencing torches that are a little more capable then plastic ultra budgetlights I used before and even this one is a step up.

OK from the ordered torches 7 were in before Christmas.
So we have been playing a little bit with them.

My son and his friends love to take some torches and blinky blink away in the dark yard and look at the house 100 meters away, searching for animal eyes reflecting on the fields (so far, they only spotted the neighbours cat)

The lack of decent cells that are still in transit keeps the playlevel at a minimum, we donā€™t want to stress these not to be trusted cells or charge them too long.
When the real cells are in we wil test the cheap@$$ cells in a fire/blast proof location to see how bad they really are, but in the mean time they will have to do.

Here is the current bunch, laid on a table from smallest to biggest diameter.
It is very hard to get decent pictures of the lights, also the torches. Nice, more to learn here

These are all budgetlights, the zoomie on the left is by far the favorite of my wife. The bronze color of the housing, the small size. She picks it up when she needs a torch.

My son feels like a trooper with the bat shaped one, it feels nice and sturdy and sits comfomfortable next to the door, feels good for us.

My favorites are the genuine Convoy C8 and the SkyRayKing.

About the Convoy, ironically, it is the only light that has a small quality issue, the anodization inside the head is not perfect to say it mildly.

Sure it canā€™t be seen when assembled. And for the rest does this torch what it is supposed to do, with the bad cells we now use, I really like the warning it gives when charge is getting low. The warm color of the light also apeals to me.

I also ordered a cheap C8 advertised as Convoy C8.
The received product had some noticable differences with the images showed on the productpage and it says ā€œUltraFireā€ as brand (this was blurred on the productpage.
The lens, reflector and LED do a good job, the beam, hotspot and spill are identical to the genuine C8. It just has some flaws (like no memory, not being able to switch group so always encoutering bliny modes, 1 small hol in tail for lanyard (thus wobbly tailstand) and I can only assume no over discharge warning.)
I send a message to the seller about it and within the hour he replied he was gong to send a good one.
Fine, but I am aware of the way the feedback and dispute system work at AliExpress. Promising to send a new one could make the options for a dispute while waiting for it close. So I rated the product with just 1 star describing the flaws and mentioning the seller said to send a new one and that I would change the rating according to what i was going to receive.
And the next day the seller wrote a message he could and would only send a new one if I removed the rating. Well, no way, so I told him that. He holded his ground even when I said I had to open a dispute.
So I did and today the seller accepted the dispute with my proposal of 100% refund, making this a $0,- torch, that is quite a bang for the buck. I urge the seller to change the pictures and just name it Ultrafire so people know what they get, even if they miss my rating.
The pictures I provided, comparing his images and received product have done the trick here.
And also trying to get the pictures for this dispute I made a nice one with the fake and real one brotherly side by side, here it is for your entertainment.

I had to add some grease to the threads of the SkyRayKing, and now the (un)screwing action is smooth and silent.
However, here also the images on the productpage do not reflect key features of the received light. I am now having a conversation with the owner about it and just sended him the pictures.
I am in the process of ordering different parts (driver and parts) and looking for MCPCBs and LEDS for future modding. I ordered another golden SRK, this time 3 LED from another seller.
So more on this in the future.

Please, I need some help, how do you guys make the pictures of the actual emitters?
I tried with the macro mode, camera on tripod.
Shining some light at the emitter from different angles. Cant get it to focus correctly so was not able to get the details below the domes.
Hopefully somebody can give me some pointers here.

AND SUCCES

Before I registered here I had a conversation with the Dutch guy promoting Olights for Gearbest on tweakers.net
I told him I was shocked that vendors get away with bullocks specs.
ā€œHey what can you do about it?ā€ was the response.
yes what is there to do?
Well I fgured that not letting them get away with it seems like a good start.

On this quest I got some results:
The seller of the fake C8 refunded 100% of the money I paid him, the 1 star rating demished sales opportunities and yes, today I saw this : Sorry, this item is no longer available!
It is pulled, nice, let him sell it as a trustfire, what is says and all is good.
When I first searched for ā€œConvoy C8ā€ and sorted priced from low to high the first page were so called Convoy C8s pricing between 8 and 13 dollars about 48 of them.
Now there is only 1 below 16 and looking at the pics, it clearly bears other namebrands and the Convoy logo is not displayed. Effectively 47 fakes are pulled or changed to be found when searching for a different name. YAY!

Same with the SkyRayKing, the seller refunded yesterday and after that a cascade of things were starting to happen on AliEpress.
I had the links to a bunch of them saved in a wordfile and most of these links are dead now.
A couple still function and with some there is a number of items in stock mentioned.
But what happens when putting them in the shoppingcart?

Even these are pulled.
Assumingly (yes I know ā€œto assume makes an A$$ out of U and MEā€ but hey) the vendor who refunded me has filed a complaint or even financial claim at the manufacterer who noted other clients not to sell it as such anymore.
Three could still be ordered, from three different vendors. If they are using the driver and button depicted, it is what I want so I ordered 1 from all three, meaning right now 1 SRK is already on its way and three have payment verified as status, and I am curous to see f they will get shipped or just cancelled by seller. I expect them to be cancelled if the productpages were wrong or be fine, and in case they are not as described, well a dispute is easily started and that would force the last wrongly promoted ones to disappear.

Very nice and interestng is that I did see new ones pop up, they show pictures of the actual driver making the productpages more correct.

So I feel quite content for sweeping a tiny itsy bitsy little corner of the internet clean.
