In the OP, I forgot to mention that the led is not glued down to the pill. That is good because you can make sure that it is centered when you install it.
The led is soldered to the wires but is not glued to the pill. In the package you get thermal glue and 2 white plastic rings.
I used a toothpick to put a small amount of the glue under the led and then installed the white plastic ring.
Then I used the reflector to center the led and then screwed it together and left it until the thermal glue dried. It ended up centered and with just a thin layer of thermal glue.
I tried to order but can't find the add to cart button for the C8 module page. I wonder if they are sold out. I sent a quick message to Hank/Joyce and will find out soon.
Gack, this stuff changes faster than I can keep up. Yesterday I'd never heard of a "C8 pill" and today they've been around forever.
So obvioiusly I need some.
This looks like it's a Romisen C-8, but no brand name.
It's direct drive. I do like the zoom-to-flood lights a whole lot.
I'm wondering if the "C8" in the Romisen light is coincidence or if it can take these screw-in C8 pills. I have a Romisen C-8 that I bought second hand, someone had modded direct drive, that needs a new LED.
And is there a warm or neutral C-8 screwin pill somewhere available?
I just ordered one of these C8 dropin pills for what is now an Ultrafire host.(It was a cheap Ebay purchase to which I added an 18650 extension tube + battery) Anyway I destroyed the original cheap aluminum pill, and before I do that to a good one, does anyone know what the max input voltage is?
the C8 pill from I.O. (link in original post) use an 8xAMC7135 board, so maximum voltage input is roughly 6V. So 2xCR123a primaries are probably OK, and 1x18650 is ideal.
InternationalOutdoors started selling these drivers pretty recently-they're a little pricier than AMC-based regulators, but they'll handle the higher voltage. EDIT: that one may be too big (18mm+) to fit the C8 pill.
Here's an alternative. JayRob over on CPF and LPF uses them in his custom XM-L Maglites. KaiDomain can be kind of sketchy but that driver is solid.
