Same question here but in regards of the D4S. With around ~2A or more per led it would make a very practical light with regulated runtimes and plenty of light.
Seems like a not insignificant amount of light would be lost to the outside edge of those mules but still useful for flood im sure.
Mules usually loose, but this is why Hank noted the LED's are just 1 mm from the glass - maybe loss's are not as severe. For general use, a mule is ok as long as it's pointed away from you. Exposed LED's and looking at them is blinding, and if you have the light sitting on a table or ground for example, there's no avoiding it. Shielding would help, but then you lose lumens... Well, at least there's no ugly beam patterns, rings, tint shifts in the beam, etc. -- at least that's what I would think. Beam should look more like a aspheric pulled in, but way wider.
I love the mule option! But I will wait for a comparative review.

I have an EDC05C, the lumintop 14500 light with the 4 nichia side emitters - if the side emitters are anywhere in your field of view, theyāre very, very bright and distracting - and this is at like 100 to maybe 400 lumens max - you canāt just sit a mule / non-optic-LED light within your field of view without it inadvertently blinding you, so take this into consideration if you were planning on using an Emisar mule for things like ceiling bouncing. With that said, the mule-esque side emitters on my EDC05C are really really useful for a lot of things - walking around at night, tasks where you can angle the light away from you, etcā¦ Be aware that as a dog-walking light, a non-optic LED light, like a mule or my EDC05C, will be extremely bright to your dog if they turn around and look at you - with an optic or reflector light, you can direct the main beam away from your dog or other people - with an unfocused LED, you canāt really do that - itāll just be super bright if youāre looking in the general direction.
Mules have their uses. The light pattern is very broadā¦ nearly 180 degrees, usually with no artifacts. Theyāre usually a lot like an aspheric zoomie in flood mode, but with an even wider beam and without the sharp demarcation at the edge of the circle. Also, an 8-LED mule will be much, much, much brighter than any zoomieās flood mode.
Think of the output as being more like a room light that you carry in your hand. It illuminates everything in your field of view, but usually only to very short range.
Also a tiny light like a D4 or KR4 wonāt be able to sustain high output for long. Expect it to ramp down very quickly due to heat.
The mules look sweet! Iām definitely getting one or two.
Wish the aux leds could have stayed on the mule, but its still a great looking light

Iām also interested in the possibility of the D4 receiving the new driver. The KR4 looks like a well-thought tail button design for plenty of people, but a D4 Ti with E21Aās powered by a 5A regulated driver would probably be the configuration that interests me the most.
I suspect the timing of that would depend on how quickly the existing stock of D4v2ās sell out, though.
Imagine an 8 LED 21700 version of the KR4 with XPL V6. That would be insane!
J4 J5 is for 3000k and 4000k SST-20 LED. V2/V3 is for the XP-L HI LED
I find the mule version is very good to be used as a photographic fill ligh, our advertising photoes were taken with one D4V2 mule.
