I had this old Halogen worklight with a burned out bulb. I never liked these type of worklights as they run very HOT. to the point of being dangerous. Should they tip over there will be a problem. Also, touch them in the wrong place and you will get burned.
I was in a Home Depot the other day and came across these 2 lights on a clearance bench. Recessed ceiling lights, LED, at $3 each. The regular price was $18. For $3 I thought is was worth a shot at gutting it for a repair (mod) of my blown worklight.
The origianl worklight was a 150W Halogen, the LED will be a “65 Watt” equivalent. Not a world beater I know, just some usable light.
I present this, not as a great mod, but only to show an example of thinking outside the box. I have no use for a recessed ceiling light, when I came across this deal all I saw was useful parts.
The light and driver.
I will put this aside, could be useful for some other project down the road
Lens removed from the light.
A closeup of the LED driver. Seems to have an isolation transformer and an AC to DC power supply, no doubt regulated.
I gutted the worklight of all it’s old hardware and mounted the LED and driver.
No big deal, but this works. And it doesn’t get HOT
Welcome to the “Modded Halogen Work light club”
Similar to what i did with one i have but i used different SMD LED modules and made this one run from 12 volts DC for use with a Battery Pack or AC adapter. I also mixed warm white and cool white modules to give it a nice neutral tint.
I’ve been trying find a product like you made without having to build my own. The closest I can find is https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/landscape-spot-flood/ but I want one brighter and without a battery. Does anything like that exist?
Yeah, these things are getting pretty common. I just picked up a simple 1000 lumen one at Menards for under $20. They also have a (stated) 2000 lumen model for under $50, see here
If you guys followed the Home Depot deal alert thread, you would know that LED work lights were/are being sold for less than $10
These lights have a high quality BridgeLux emitter
