Solder Station

I have 5 lbs of 63/37 and 1 lb of 60/40 Kester 44 solder in stock. I’m covered for life if they decide to ban leaded solder in the USA. Being 66 years of age, I think I’m safe to say that.

Nice vids JVW.

Mr Glenn I hope you outlive that solder in good health and cry and complain about not having more. Guys like you keep us all going.
Edit I’m only 10 yrs behind. My wheelchair feels older than me!

Thanks my friend. Thankfully I am in good health. I hope all is well with you. I’ve been in the electronics industry since the early 70’s. Worked several jobs including circuit board manufacturing for Grumman Aerospace and other hi-tech companies at the time, a tech at a stereo store restoring old tube amplifiers, and lastly, wiring and servicing offset web printing presses for 30 years. I’m must have made several thousand solder connections in my life so far. Now retired. Today I’m just a hobbyist building or fixing something that requires soldering. I’m not an expert on surface mount soldering. Point to point and through hole soildering is where my experience is. My vision isn’t good as it used to be to do the really tiny stuff some of the guys here can do. Oh well, it is what it is.

I have been using a 75 watt from “circuit specialists” ($30 plus shipping) This One for about 3 years now and never had a hiccup from it yet and use it for ALL my modding. It IS an anolog but I prefer them over digital.

They also have the same one in a digital for $19 more HERE

Some of these new irons look straight out of the 1980’s. Lol

There surely is room for a little bit younger industrial designer in the soldering station business

I inherited a JBC 30S soldering iron from my brother close to 3 decades ago, and despite being beaten up its tip survived until the beginning of last year when I disposed of it before two dead heaters. Switched to a Hakko clone and bought a genuine T18 tip, and although it isn't bad, it is no match for what it was my old iron's flat round 3 × 1.5mm tip in terms of oxidation resistance. Here's the proof of JBC's goodness:

JBC The Soldering Co

Cheers ^:)

The OP is looking for something under $50, maybe $100 at most, so JBC is not an option.

Leaded solder fear nonsense. Just believe you're impervious to lead and let God sort it out. I'll continue using 63/37 no matter what, in fact I'd use Sn63Pb36Cu1 or Sn62Pb36Cu2 if it were readily available.

I’d love to own a JBC soldering station but they’re about 5 times the price of the Hakko FX-888D here in the States. I haven’t had any problems with the tips oxidizing prematurly.
