*BLF LT1 Lantern Project) (updated Nov,17,2020)

BLF 天灯

As long as 天灯 stands for Sky lantern and not number five Kung Pao Chicken

For anybody who wants to buy/test LEDs, here are some links which will ship immediatly in small quantities.

Ok, here are some not dead links:

Here is 5000k 90+CRI:

Here is 4000k 90+CRI:

Here is 3500k 90+CRI:

2700k 90+CRI:

My version based on Djozz idea:

BLF Ln10

or:

BLF Ln10

That way we can just call it the Lan10, and everyone will know immediately what it is, but the actual item can have the cool logo.

interesting idea

A few bucks, a trip to Home Depot, some adhesive, and about a day combined, and you can have a fairly sturdy magnet base. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can pick up a tube full of small neodymium magnets for a few bucks. They are strong, so spacing most of them around the outer edge and few near the center should be reasonably stable without using a single big expensive magnet.

A tripod-attachment-point compatible magnetic base could be made in a similar fashion; just embed the magnets in an aluminum disk with the threaded bolt in the center.

I think this is the best name so far. It is not dorky, as some of the aforementioned names. I also agree that “BLF Lantern” is too generic. I want something a bit more special for a BLF special.

Actually, if someone could come up with a name that includes a reference to it’s original maker (DBSAR), that would be even better. Since he came up with the original idea, and is doing most of the R & D work himself, I think his name should at least be referenced somehow in the name of the product, unless he disapproves. For example, the FW3A name references the original designer: Fritz . Works . Triple . Aluminum flashlight.

Yea, that would work. Magnet the size of the bottom with a 1/4 20 thread stickin’ up out of it would work fine.

Very cool build! I’ve always thought there’s been a lack of quality built, efficient and practical lanterns given all the handheld flashlights that are out there. I’m deathly interested in buying.

I apologize if I’ve missed it, but there’s quite a few pages. What are the final run times and lumen outputs on the levels?

You can get any size/shape magnet you want from HERE. Seriously, they even do customs!

Here you go. You only missed it by a couple of pages. DBSAR wrote a nice long description in THIS POST.

EDIT: There is no actual FINAL to this yet. DBSAR is still testing his second self-made prototype. We will need to get a manufacturer to make a prototype using the specs from that post, and test THAT one to see what the real FINAL specs will be.

DBSAR Lighthouse
DBSAR Pharos
DBSAR Cynosure
DBSAR Lodestar

It's great to see this lantern getting close to becoming a reality.

A neodymium magnet embedded in a steel dish with a hole for a bolt(like those used for magnetic hooks) that would probably be plenty strong enough(without being too strong and expensive like a base-sized neodymium magnet would be) and just use a bit of glue or epoxy or a nut and threadlock to keep the 1/4" 20 screw in place when it is not attached to the lantern. oh, like these.

Some interesting ideas. I kind of like BLF Skylantern and BLF LAN10

Seeing a user configurable sunset mode would be great if possible. I would think as long as a half hour fade to off would be quite useful.

Maybe BLF Eternal Flame or BLF Eternal Lantern or BLF EF Lantern, referencing warm tint candle mode, and long/infinite solar assisted runtime?

The next could be
BLF Lantern 2

What I like is a customer can know exactly what it is only reading the name. Q8 is much harder, most think it’s from AUDI and GT is from Ford.
And there are much less lantern models produced than torches, so I assume it will take a while for the next camping lamp.

Apple does the same: Descriptive Name and the next version gets a +1 or an +S

The logos are nice, also they need a bit of tweaking.
The first can also be read as BLF Lintern
and the second as BLF Lontern.

I like BLF UL (ultimate lantern)

I like that……… maybe …… Dbsar’s BLF UL-1 …… allowing for future upgrades or changes?

“BLF Lantern” is all the name it needs. “BLF LT” to keep in style with the latest BLF projects

I like BLF LT

How about this?

nice simple design

Thank you
I believe a minimal/linear design will be easier to engrave and also easier to distinguish
