Plenty of alternatives, you can either buy Maglite Nite-ize leds or you can buy this

But for that amount you can buy yourself a decent light though
thanks, i plan to use d cell replacement adapters that hold 3aaâs each.
30 lumen of the Dorcy one seems very low output. Iâm not convinced it would actually be an âupgradeâ.
Look for something like this:
Iâm sure they do international shipping, but donât know the cost. You might be able to find something similar on ebay or available more locally for you.
The Dorcy drop-ins are not very good - fairly dim with blue tints.
The Nite Ize 55 and 74 lumen drop-ins are much better.
I have one of these in my old 4D Mag:
I like these a lot. I think mine is rated at 350 lumens.
Thanks for all the replys, hopefully I wont melt my plastic 2d energizer flashlight,
I went through a few Mag LED replacements and a Nite-Ize, nothing terribly impressive.
âThough I did take one of the Mags and stick it into a 2ĂAA light. Easy mod. Toss the cap that holds the hotwire bulb, with an Xacto knife lightly shave the reflector hole that you can firmly press-fit the Mag, and youâre done. Consistent output vs dimming with SOC, and about 5Ă the runtime vs the come-with hotwire bulb.
But in an actual Maglite, those replacements kinds stink. No noticeable increase in brightness (thermally isolated, so canât do much), and usually crappy blue/purple tint.
Iâm taking a few approaches to mod some Mags I recently got, still waiting for that Slow Boat From Chiny to bring my parts.
Do yourself a favor and save your money buying off the shelf âupgradesâ for maglights. You will have more money sunk into it than itâs worth. You can easily take the same amount you are about to waste and get a far better light.
Now if you are custom modding something, Thatâs another game all together.
You only buy a Mag when you want to go clubbinâ.
No sane person buys a Mag expecting to get a hotrod.
âThough the OP said he was just upgrading âa old 2 d cell flashlightâ, not specifically a Mag.
Now Iâll be the odd ball and chime in for the cheap dorcy LED. Yeah itâs pretty dim. Yeah itâs a bit blue (about like a nichia ds). But itâs cheap. And it draws only the tiniest current. Your batts will leak from old age before they go dead! I have a couple in my long term emp kit.
Which nite ize do you have and how much heat does it generates? My bulb holder is plastic.
yes, we bought the Dorcyâs, too, several years ago for three Mags.
as Buck91 posted, they are a stow-away gem. twice a year (DST) i check them.
still as good as the start with the same alkaline batteries. no leaks, no issues.
Not sure you got around to saying why you are doing this? Sure you can, but as neo mentioned you are not going to be saving any money. There are plenty of nice inexpensive ($5, $10, $20) LED lights out there that will run off 2 or more AA batteries (regular or rechargeable) for quite some time.
If you just like this light and want to do this, then sure, no problem. May even be able to get a better reflector
Iâm doing this project as a fun upgrade.saving money wasnât a factor.I have more led lights than common sense as my wife would say.
