The petals aren’t what bothered me with my EC03 sst40, it was the variations and I gues “rings” in the area outside the hotspot (corona?) and the spill. I saw rings of black (very little light) and then bright light. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong, but I just never felt good about how the beam evenness looked. The petal effect never bothers me, I have it on my haekelite hk04 and others and it is fine. It’s just uneven light inside beams kindve eeks me. I feel like i saw that unevenness in some posted pics of the ft02s sst40 beamshots… maybe I’m wrong?
To be honest, I like the EC03 beam a lot and the ft02s beam isn’t bad for what it is a d the emitters used. The EC03 beam doesn’t have much in the way of artifacts, and the cloverleaf effect of the multi reflector setup is a given. I don’t have a sst40 ft02s, but the hotspots of my old SRK and the ft02s are about the same at 2 meters, and the EC03 is smaller and more focused (due to the sst40s) and no tint shift. However, the throw is about the same for the xhp50.2 and sst40 lights. Pretty impressive on both. The 7 year old SRK I have also holds it’s own, but the XMLs hold it back. Will soon have some sst40’s though.
Yes you’re right. When the EC03 caught my attention the black color XHP50.2 6500k was available and I assumed the green color was out of stock. I know now it was never offered. I’m kicking myself now for not getting the black one when it was available.
The petal effect is expected and I see that to some extent on all of my multi emitter lights. My FT02S beam when viewed on a white wall or ceiling at 1.5 m away is kind of a mess with the darker then usual band/ring of tint shift outside the hotspot and the unevenness outside that. The band shows outdoors, the unevenness not so much. Yes, I believe the proximity of the LEDs is the cause, maybe not the proximity itself but losing the inside walls of the individual cups due to the closeness of the LEDs. A member here mentioned it was probably a design decision to increase throw but it seems the depth and size of the cups have more effect on throw then the proximity of the LEDs. It is interesting to compare the FT02s to the Haikelite HK04 with it’s more widely spaced quad XHP50.2 emitters and similar output.
Anyway, I took the FT02S on a walk a few days ago and it’s fun to use.
Hi, I have the Ft02s and this convoy holster fits it perfectly, better then any other torch/holster combo I have beside the ft03 setup. I have a holster for 80% of my lights and have tried numerous brands and sizes to find good matches.
