The THROWER Thread

we should have more of these charts. saves a lot of time
tks

But lights like the TK70 and Xtar S1 are big throwers and certainly deserve mention. I wouldn’t put a Skyray King on here though.

Sorry for asking maybe already answered on a different thread. Is the Jacob A60 ever compared to this one?

Actually, the Fandyfire and the Ultrafire HD2010s may have different drivers, so there’s at least 2 variations: Review: UltraFire HD2010

East-092 on JohnnyMac’s Ultrafire
and East-092B on Night Breaker’s FandyFire

TY Jeansy, great idea!

Silverfish, I believe the main objections to the “recoil” concept are difficulty of heat dispersal and the emitter support arm and emitter being in the way of the beam. I have one recoil, a Pelican 2010, that produces a small hotspot and virtually no spill, from a comparatively weak emitter, but i think the heat problem may negate the use of the better emitters.

I’m waiting for a xml recoil….

shiningbeam romisen tc-601 ii is very good throw for less than $30.

That UltraOK eBay special needs some serious modding before it starts to perform decently as a thrower. Even after fixing the hollow pill, using lower gauge wire between the driver and the star, and reducing the resistance in the tail switch, it still has less throw than a UF 980L, which itself has less throw than the HD2010 judging by the accounts of those who own both.

In a nutshell, I don’t really think it has a legitimate place in this thread. Having said that, it does of course smoke the A60 in terms of total output, being that it sports an XM-L.

@ margamanos : No they are not compared. The Jacob has bigger reflector and XR-E led for higher lux numbers (throw) whilst the other one has smaller reflector and XM-L led for floody beam with higher lumens number for total illumination of the nearer area.

@ Jeansy: The UniqueFire HS 802 has somewhere around 30 Kcd throw but with some variation due to driver differences. A new pill sporting a XR-E R2 in either green or red can be had from manafont.com but no lux measurements have been given for those.

This light deserves mention as a good colored rifle light because a tailcap with a remote pressure switch is also available from Manafont.com.

I see that Manafont.com only sells the light complete with either red or green color XR-E and not a white R2 bin emitter anymore. A remote pressure switch tailcap for the light is still available bringing the total cost for a well throwing colored weapon light to 34 usd.

What about adding a column after the model, for the basic info on emitter/battery like "XM-L T6 - 2x18650" that would make it easier to understand and compare.

OK guys, I will try to add suggestions but I’m mobile at the moment. Keep them coming. I’ll maybe add a small box at bottom for best coloured and maybe best AA thrower, but only the one light of each.

There are loads of great lights which will come close but I really want to keep it at the top two in each range and prob one reflector/one aspheric. This keeps it uncomplicated and will be done solely on Lux figures.

let’s wait and see how well the modified thrunite TN31 can do for $285. Hope to see detailed reviews soon.

I have one UltraOK on the way and after your comments i realize that its more suitable for bicycle light. I might need just a little more guidance when i receive for modding. Still looking for a good thrower then.

Thank you both!

The UltraOK is a very good thrower but that is a different one to what is usually mentioned, the original had an XRE as opposed to that one with an XML. The original is only just behind the Jacob A60 from what I can make out. I will find out soon tho as making this chart has made me order the Jacob also, infact I’m tempted to order another as I have a couple of XPG2s on route with suitable drivers 8)

Remember, this is all situational and to a large extent subjective anyway. The line between what might be considered throwy or floody is drawn at different points by different people according to their own particular experiences and preferences.

You might even find that the UltraOK is a bit too throwy for use as a bike light. Or perhaps you wont.

Will you put links on the two you mentioned at the bottom for the newbies please? Like this:

A good P60 such as a solarforce package or a C8 such as the XinTD maybe a better starting point.

Good idea

HA! Jeansy - you hard working lux comparator! Our minds think alike. I've ordered 3 Jacobs more. 1 I'll work on converting 1 to a hard (over)driven hotrod XML thrower. One is to be kept stock. 1 is for XPG-2 and 1 is for a secret little project ;-)

I must admit that it is only the third flashlight I ever have had more than one of. The first being Sipik SK68, the second being the Small Sun C10 and now this :-)

Regarding the Small Sun C10: I've measured it at 45 Kcd but since the reports of its tail cap current being anything from 0,8 A to 2,1 A I guess there are variations to measurements too. Mine pulled 1,4A in high and did 45 kCd. It is VERY easy to mod with Nanjg 105C 2,8 A driver (despite soldering of the led wires I consider it almost a "drop-in driver" solution for the light) With the Nanjg pulling a steady 2,8 A I get 68 kCd BTW.

Regarding Lux number variations: I've compared my meter values to what others have reported and my values seem to be within 5% of what others report. I put that down to battery variations as most lights will get higher numbers with unprotected cells of good quality. That little protection pcb costs a little voltage drop (guessing here) reducing the total watt output of the lights even with constant current drivers.

Any custom lights admitted for the list ? I have a Uniquefire UF-T20 aspheric, It’s an E1320 mod XR-e 2.8amp… Throws 500 yards no problem !

Yes im looking forward to the Jacob, the XPG2 and driver were destined for my UltraOK but after doing this it would be a waste not to use the Jacob.

I shall adjust the Small sun, ill try to add all suggestions until they conflict and then i will try to compromise or use the best regarded, ie i would use a figure published by SB or TurboBB over a unknown member unless there is sound proof to think otherwise.

The Small Sun sounds impressive to make that reading, i gave mine to another member on here for project use.

OT: Where abouts in Denmark are you from, i do company training in Kolding now and then, not recently tho. I enjoyed the English bar in the centre and Daisy’s if you know it
