I’ve been looking for a 16340 light to keep as a back up and keep everything under $25. I don’t want a light that is to crazy on design just a strait tradional light. This is what I am looking at getting but want a second option. Good combo or what should I change? Links please
You can’t go wrong with a Shining Beam I-Mini. Built to take a beating. Made for Shining Beam by Olight. Mine went through the wash the other day and worked perfectly right out of the machine. $25
The DX version linked is apparently 5 mode. Cheap, throws decent and tailstands. The Mini is a better value though.
My two favorite 16340 lights are the Nitecore EC1 for throw and the Eagletac D25C clicky for flood. Even with lower output I like the modes on both better with cr123 batteries.
I’ve used the K-109 some 2 years ago. Actually, quite a good small flashlight for its price. Only the Emitter is outdated.
I would rather recommend the following: Eastward YJ J08 or UltraFire 123A
XP-G and XM-L are much more effective, compared to XR-E…
But if you are looking for a really cheap CR123A/16340 flashlight, You can also look at these: Romisen RC-C3 and Romisen RC-D6
D6 even has a magnetic tail - useful feature.
Why pay more for comparative quality, more weight, and modes ya don’t need? I should know. I bought bulk. One of the best bang for the buck EDC’s out there IMO.
Depends what you are after. An RCR/16340 light is generally wider/fatter than an AA, but can be shorter.
An RCR has similar capacity to a 14500, so fairly equal in runtime/performance. The main advantage is if you swap to primaries you get 3.0v instead of 1.2/1.5 that you get with an AA.
Does it need to be really small?
Solarforce L2M has a stumpy mode with allows 1x16340 or 1x18350 to be used. Combined with an XP-G or XP-E emitter you could get quite nice light and runtimes out of it with a fair amount of throw for a compact light.
As for cells, I highly recommend quality cells. My AW 16340’s easily out perform my DX Trustfire Flames 14500’s, despite the Trustfire’s supposedly having more mAh.
I have the Akoray K109, but my one uses CR123, I use AW cells, as was told they were good, to be honest not impressed with AW cells though.
The light itself is great, really tough, has often been inadvertantly treated roughly but hasn’t missed a jolt.
I don’t like the amount of modes, it has slow strobe, double fast strobe(2 flashes) high, medium, low, though I can forgive it as it has mode memory.
It is very bright for it’s size and cells last a long time, even when used on high.
As I like also simple flashlights I also have a Ultrafire MCU-C7, it just has strobe, high and low.
I got both of these from DX, but a search today says not recognised ?
I whole heartedly recommend the akoray k109 though, one of my fave CR123 lights, I have Fenix P1 and P1D, but prefer the 109 to be honest, maybe not quite as well made but perfectly acceptable, and does the job intended, putting out light rather than looking good.
You absolutely have to go with the TrustFire Mini 01! In fact, Rey (WWEFANS), should still have some of the BLF editions available from the second batch. They are 3-mode with no blinkies and a great low and great high. It's a must have if you are using 16340, ;)
The Trustfire protected Flames are great cells to use as long as they are genuine.
That gets you a very nice compact 16340 light for $16.00, ($22 including cells). This light is very bright for its size and is easily pocketable. The XP-G R5 drop-in is driven mildly enough that it won't be an excessive load to dramatically shorten the life of your cells.
I would never use a 501 2 4 or whatever for a backup…they are so cheap that you are not save for a fail…
If you want a p60 style then solarforce is the way to go. There are host available for 10$ up from solarforce sales itself. The mini can be used with one cell the others with 2…
I have the mini01 too and I am very impressed and use it as esc on my keys…
I also have an c60 fromm wallbuys on its way to me, fairly cheap 7$.
Not so much “issues”, they just to me don’t seem to have much guts/performance, my Ultrafire BRC seem to have better staying power.
I’ve not done any actual testing of them, I bought the SAW from a respected seller on CPF, they also seem to lose power quicker when not used than other so called inferior cells.
I’ve recently ordered some ztar and pana cells so will see how it goes with them.
On my single 18650 light, it seems the really bright only lasts around 30 secs or so regardless of which ones I use, but again the lowest time is with AW, I have I think 6 18650 AW, and around the same CR123, but the 123 seem a lot better size for size sort of thing.
