The pictures really don't do it justice. It is so bright it's scary.
It's a mason jar frosted inside with some of that frosting Christmas stuff I had laying around. The bottom is a battery box for four 18650's with protection. inside is a 6 inch copper pipe filled with wheat back pennies and a little fujik. 6T6 driver and 6 T6 LED's from an unique fire 6T6. The driver is heatsinked onto copper washers I had laying around and the switch is an extra from a T8 (sst-80)
Interesting but I think I’ll pass on the moonshine. Funny but it does kind of remind me of it when I carry it around. I had a friend years ago that would bring out a quart once in a blue moon. Tasted like lighter fluid. My drinking days are over and I can honestly say the moonshine is one of the drinks I don’t miss much.
Can’t say I ever tried sterno but man I used to make some really bad wine. It would run about 20% 40 proof so more like schnapps I guess. I made hundreds of gallons of it over the years. I had about 10 Five gallon jugs from Culligan full all the time. You never knew what the heck it would taste like. Pears, apples, grapes, blackberry’s you name it if I could get it for free it got turned into wine.
ok, four 18650 cells in series, six xm-ls sinked as best as possible, got it.
funny, I’ve got an ancient bi-aladin lantern that I keep thinking of using to do something similar with. With two toddlers running about, a li ion powered lantern seems a safer deal. I’m going to have to run with this as I can see what to do now.
I just need to get a few ww hi cri xm-l2’s to get the tint right.
Although I haven’t used it again because when you remove the batteries the protection kicks in and it must have a good sized capacitor because it takes a long time before it discharges and lets you put fresh batteries in. I rigged two wires up to it so that you can touch the ends to a battery and drain the capacitor. It works perfectly but like I said it’s a bit of a pain. For my family I just made them with a regular battery box and have them use protected cells.
I made one with three led’s in series that runs off of four 18650’s and I have no idea how long it will run. It’s not nearly as bright but it will run for days. I had it on for over 24 hours straight and when I pulled the batteries and let them rest. They were still mostly charged.
They are fun to make and it’s kinda cool that it’s mostly stuff I have laying around.
thats odd how i never came across this thread. i really like your lantern. i think its cool and unique and looks to be pretty bright.
i actually created a thread a while back ago asking members for recomendations for a lantern.
we’re thinking of going camping in the next month or so, and not only we can battle our flashlights, now i can battle them with your unique lantern….i will pm you ….hopefully you can sell me one of your inventions.
