It looks like a Pipe Bomb, but it's not (or is it?)

I came across this on eBay [link] .

It reminded me of a fancy, hi-tech looking Thermite Bomb from a cheap sci-fi flick.

It got me to thinking, I wonder how close to a real bomb (as in li-ion cell runaway explosion) this 6x18650 flashlight really is?

Thank goodness it doesn’t come with a charging circuit, but it is advertised as having “Internal wiring applies the high efficient booster circuit.” (Whatever that is supposed to mean. I would think it would have a buck driver, rather than a boost driver.)

So, assuming that the user takes reasonable care of making sure that all the batteries remain balanced, I suppose the risk of anything bad happening would be pretty low. But it gives me the heebie-geebies thinking about people casually using one of these things.

Anyone else agree that it looks lilke a bomb?

Or could be a potential bomb?

Can’t say for sure but it looks like it has the oh so popular LatticeBright emiters.

I honestly might buy it as a host. I’ve liked that reflector set-up for a while now (great flood/throw combo I would think) but this is the cheapest I’ve seen it

It would be annoying to keep 6 paired cells though.

reminds me of the solarstorm l3 a little bit.

At this price it can be almost guaranteed to be latticebright

OOOOOH man, look at that reflector

It’s a piece of art

It looks like LB to me.
It is probably not possible to run all 14 XM-L’s full tilt anyway, so depending on the LED configuration, maybe 2S7P. Maybe just swapping out the center LED and 3 of the others with a CREE XM-L would be enough.

Just trying to think of a cheaper-easier mod.

Interesting reflector design, The first thing i would do is mod a XP-L HI in the middle reflector for some throw, then fill the surrounding reflectors with XM-L 4C emitters for a flood with nice tint. It looks like a 3P2S cell set up, so i would use only 6 new, matched protected Panasonic good cells in that.

Close enough for me. Go see what an 8 cell bomb looks like. Lots of nice pictures in there on page 2 and 3 as well. I think the guy was extremely lucky not to loose body parts.

Same seller that sells MH20 for $25. All their flashlight prices are too low, I am sure you know what will happen next.

… and lucky not to have suffered any long term problems from smoke (hydrofluoric) inhalation.

Call me a stick in the Mud—I agree with your assessment—but your title is
Over The Top/Alarmist.

Well……. OTT and alarmist may just serve as a warning to anyone who stumbles across this, and doesn’t know the potential danger associated with multiple LiIon torches.

The way I see it, and please don’t take this as insulting, no one really has the right to call-out a posts title. Except admin.

… to keep the peace. 0:)

Originally, I had the title as “Neutron Bomb”. I wonder what kind of reaction that would have gotten? (heh! heh! )

HereAgainAgain-Not insulted.

The original title may have the unfortunate consequence of returning
search results that land this thread on the “radar” of agencies such as the
( U.S.) Dept. of Homeland Security.

I don’t know. The price looks about right. I’ve seen that type of reflector before, and would be willing to bet that it’s plastic. Lattice brite…maybe, XML…could be. The old original XMLs can be purchased for a song these days.

Does “Avoid direct exposure to the eyes” mean “Don’t look at it”?

After seeing the review of Old Lumens about the Palight Boss1 I think that I nominate that as another new contester for the title of most explosive/dangerous flashlight. (And I hope I am wrong on that)

I woudl simply drill a hole in the center of the back and install a rubber plug. (as a pressure release, so it becomes a rocket booster instead of a pipe bomb.
