It's only disturbing because you look at it with american eyes...

It has nothing to do with white people playing black people out of racist motives.

Black pete also isn't a weird pimp or something.

In Holland and Belgium this is a catholic celebration, celebrating the birthday of Saint Nicholas, who seems to have had some moorish helpers back in the days.

On december 6th, kids get a present from St. Nicholas and his helper.

no i didnt assume racism, i just think hes creepy looking lol

i seen that and was embarrased to post it lol, my sentiment was the same - guy looks creepy

I wouldn't trust the children either.

lol... that one on the left looks like hes got a master plan

But I just went to DX to see the whole pic and I find absolutely nothing wrong with what I saw...

i bet 4 eyes is a freak

And you accuse someone else of being prejudiced? The above is a TRULY bigoted comment.

Don't know what world you live in where the "Sinterklaas" pictured above would not be disturbing, at least to a parent...

I guess European bigotry is more enlightened than American bigotry.

I shall refrain from further comment.

Now that is some deal if you get that lot for $60. That's what I call a Group Buy.......lol

That a keyboard splash guard I see under the tree?

Are you being serious?
I’m not prejudiced. I just addressed the two concerns i read from mostly american people on DX forums about this image.
Guess you can’t be wrong eh, your not prejudiced yourself either… that’s obvious.

Vortex, I understood your explanation and found your post quite clear and informative.

And nice lot for $60!

i wonder why the broad with her hand on her hip has the same look on her face as my gf when i tell her to go make me a sammich

Racist, Sexist, Prejudiced, gotta love it!

Sure can't joke about it any more.

Edit: You know the older I get, the more I realize that all young women are good looking... But the one with the glasses... Woof, I know the lioness is lurking under those specs!

I saw it a while ago and was freaked out too. Just creepy looking.

I agree.

And I'm so sick of hearing about comments talking about Americans as we see things only this way or that.

The majority of people who looked at that would think what the heck.

Hmmm, if I offended anyone with my first post, I’d like to say sorry. I didn’t mean to do that. I also didn’t mean anything wrong about Americans. It’s just that I thouht an American once told me the white man pretending to be a black man by rubbing some black paint on his face reminded him very much of how black people where depicted in old American movies and that it was an image they’d rather leave in the past. When someone else mentioned it on DX’s forum, I figured more people from USA still feel that way.
Nothing more, I didn’t mean to upset anyone and I don’t have any prejudice towards Americans.
Sorry!

Vortex, not offended one bit. It's true, generally the US is hyper-sensitive about black-white race relations, relative to the rest of the world. It's part of our history. Black-face is a definite no-no. That's the first thing I thought upon seeing the ad - not because I'm sensitive or thin-skinned, but just aware of the taboo. I also thought about how the Chinese are sometimes pretty clueless about our culture (as we are for theirs).

But your explanation made perfect sense, clarified it for me, and I'm glad you posted it.
