Bitsa / frankenstien / left-overs build - Ever seen a sexy butt like this? FINISHED

After doing this build I was left with the head of the Trustfire df009. I also had a Fenix extension tube (for tk61 / 75 / 76 etc…). I tried to modify the Fenix battery carrier a long time ago and made a mess of it so ordered up an astrolux battery carrier. The carrier is set up 2s2p and I would’ve just used the xhp-70 already in the df009 but I didn’t have a 2s e-switch driver. So the xhp-70 got swapped out for a sst-90v2 and the carrier will need rewiring. First up , to the lathe :star: Still to do - work out an led centering ring and make the tail.

Update 11/4/20

I made up a centering ring but kinda failed. It needed to be slightly thicker for better focus but more importantly when I opened the hole in the reflector I didn’t open it quite enough and twisted the glass off the sbt-90 :person_facepalming:

Anywhoo I moved on to making the tail.

Test fit. I used an SRK bezel I had left over from another build.

I flipped it in the chuck a few times and unfortunately marred the surface.

So I spent some time trying to download code to get a nice light show from the adafruit trinket and neopixels. I managed to get a lava lamp to work and also this simple mixed colour to work. What I wanted was a rotating rainbow but it’s beyond my comprehension of code and I didn’t manage to find a code that worked on the trinket. Still it looks sexy

It’s not quite finished yet. I still need to touch up a few things. Like fit an 18650 protection circuit board to the trinket (not that I think it really needs it because it’s not going to be left on). Once I’ve decided on what program to run on the trinket I’ll secure everything in the tail and peel off the protective tape I have on the mirror and glass.

The tail operates independently of the head. It’s a twisty. Screw on to turn on, unscrew a crack to turn off. I used a convex mirror at the base of the infinity mirror which gives the effect of a parabolic shape rather than a tube shape. I’m pretty happy with how it looks so I’m keen to finish it.

Hey mate looks like the government has banned posting pics :stuck_out_tongue:

Doh! You think I’d learn after all the times I’ve stuffed it up. Will sort it a bit later, busy ATM.

See pics now?

Yea its working now. Is the LED a SBT90?

The build looks great!

Dammit I can’t even remember what type of led I have in my hands. You’re right it’s - LUMINUS SBT90.2 5700K SBT-90-WDS-F72-SA600 SA-H4

(Yeh, I had to go look up the specs of what I actually bought :person_facepalming: )

Yeah, good to see someone else scratching the itch!

Something you may find usefull. One of the pcbs in the astrolux carriers has 2 batteries connected to + other 2 to - put 2 of these in one carrier and without modding anything you have 1s4p carrier.

True but then I would need to mod at least one end of the other carrier to make it usable

Nice mod pp. :+1:

:+1:

What is the MCPCB from?

I got it from kaidomain some years back. Not available anymore. They are relatively thin but DTP copper.

I like how the screws and solder tabs are away from the LED. Looks like a vertical slide on your lathe how is that for vertical cuts?

I don’t remember ever using it to make a vertical cut. I’m always using it to mount either a spindle or work piece then use it as fine adjustment to height. It’s not the best piece of equipment, short usable stroke and the gibs are done up kinda firm to reduce slop.

Having said that I definitely appreciate having it in my kit

I cant get my head around what you did in the tail.

WOW! just WOW! That rocks mate! There’s a kids program that was on when I was very young - it is responsible for my addiction!
Jamie and the magic torch. - this is getting like it! :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeh, wasn’t real clear on the details. It’s an infinity mirror like I did on this one . I’ll show the parts and how it works a bit better before I close it up.

I thought I was in for some cultural experience at first. Then I looked closer at the pic and something began to tingle from a distant memory. Then when I watched the vid - WOW I’ve seen that! I have no idea what happened in the show but I know I’ve seen it once or twice when I was little too  :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope I’m not the only one that doesn’t know whats going on. Your freaking me out pp.

Very nice light ” PP ” , I’m still trying to understand what you have built. The Picasso of flashlights you are :person_with_crown:
