Flashlight for kids?

Hi!

My baby girl is 2.5 years old and like all kids her age she LOVES to do what daddy does, so she’s taking my tools and “repairing” things around the house, using my knives, and playing with flashlights. We often go on walks in night time, sometimes in a nearby forest and she uses a flashlight to shine her way. Problem is, crafty little bugger knows how to operate them and immediately puts them on high/turbo. Sometimes I think she knows better than I do.

Can anyone recomend a floody flashlight with relatively low output cca.200 lm that is not a twisty. I have few AAA lights but they loose juice quickly when on higher modes and our walks are not that short so maybe an AA or something rechargable?

1 Thank

I got my 4 year old and 6 year old Sofirn SP01S and they loved then and were able to figured out the switch within minutes. At the time they were 3 and 5 and it was their 3rd light. They started with some cheap wholesale club light then when ThruNite was giving away the Ti3 lights, I got them one of those as well.

Safety first with kids!

Better stick to AA’s with kids due to the large energy density with Lithium Ion!
My son has my Amutorch Stainless steel AA light with 219c, he uses for reading books in bed, my 7yo daughter has my Enogear SS with 219C
Both are AA lights with more than enough output for kids, have 3 levels, and to my opinion very important; without strobe.

Agreed 100% my kids are always leaving their lights on. I use rechargeable AA and AAA in their current lights.

How is the Enogear to use?

Pretty straight forward, simple 3 level.
However my latest one (i bought another with sw4500 K 219B ) had troubles from the beginning with the driver, I messaged them and on BLF i received a reaction from Fireflies/Enogear telling me to email them, but unfortunately they don’t react on my emails…

So i decided to buy one of Rey his drivers to replace it with.
Hopefully it will arrive soon

Yeah if the kid is going to have access to the light all the time, rechargeable double A’s is probably the way to go. However if you’re keeping all of your lights and her walking light out of her hands except for when you’re walking Then you could use something with two switches one for mode changing and one for on and off. You just need to securly wrap tape over the mode switch. The Wowtac A1S on medium is 140 lumens and lasts for 18 hours with a tail on and off switch. It’s a little stiff but she could probably do it with two hands. I’m sure there are other two switch models out there that you could pick from also. The Wowtac A7 would operate the same way but it’s kind of a throwy light but that may work okay at the lower levels.

This looks interesting… high on AA is 120 lm and lasts long enough, turbo is 255 but she’s still not fast enough for double clicks. Swich location is perfect and they make it in pretty colours

Just remember they’re likely to lose whatever you give them. So give them something cheap. Give them something that won’t get too hot on high. 2 and a 1/2 years old is mighty young, So on/off with low voltage protection is probably your best bet.

The SP10S has a wonderful color temp but a terrible UI… especially for children. I know because I have one and a 10 and 12year old. It does a press and hold to off, and that’s a killer. It also turns on way too easily, though that might be an advantage for a 2.5 year old, lol. The beam , though, is beautiful.

If she could handle the tail clicky of something like a lumen top Tool AA, that might be ideal. Easy on off with low voltage protection.

She has no problem operating my Skilhunt headlamps (one standard and one with Quadrupel’s driver) so I’m not worried about UI as long as it’s relatively simple but there’s a good point about kids loosing stuff… Sofirn is like 20$ delivered, not much but I’d bu bummed if she looses it.

So, anything cheaper with a side swich?

My littles love them more that the twist lights. It a perfect fit for their little hands and its so much better than the zooming they started with. The zoomie had to got though 6 modes including strobe and some weird lantern mode to shut off.

The Astrolux MF05 would be the way to go.

I’ll try that one out and hope she doesn’t lose it the same week… or maybe I’ll like the pink/red colour and keep it

I used to recommend this flashlight for kids:

https://www.banggood.com/Meco-XPE-Q5-600-Lumen-7W-Zoomable-LED-Flashlight-For-1xAA-1_2V-p-907006.html

Looks like Banggood has raised the price quite a bit.

A similar looking flashlight on eBay.com:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Zoomable-Ultra-Bright-1000LM-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Light-Lamp-Silver-OK/402121075999

(Still kinda pricey for what it is, but cheaper than Banggood.)

If the search engine on AliExpress wasn't practically worthless, maybe I could find a better price there.

Something with output of a AAA flashlight but looks close enough to yours to fool them

I agree. Anything brighter could damage little eyes. You KNOW that , sooner or later, she is going to stare into that thing on whatever max brightness it has.

I gave my 3-yr old daughter the “ReyLight Copper Pineapple” I received as a prize for last year’s OL Contest. It works well for her. I have it running on a rechargeable AA battery right now, and that gets quite bright. And I have the option of putting a 14500 Li-ion in it when she gets older for extra brightness. She has no complaints.

Inland R22 from Microcenter. All of 3bux each.

AA light with physical sideclicky (ie, not an e-switch).

Standard 20mm TIR lens drops in if the reflector’s too throwy.

Simple stoopit 1-mode boost driver, meant for alkaleaks, but works fine with LFP cells (flat 3.2V) and brighter output. Wouldn’t try Li-ion, though. Use alkaleaks, though, and it’ll suck ’em dry.

Ah, here it is…

Thanks guys, I’ll check them out.

Interesting thread.
I’m not sure if this is available elsewhere but here in Australia we can buy an Eveready Pico Dolphin Flashlight for about AUD8
It runs on one AA battery & claims 50 lumens for 13 hrs. It has a simple on/off switch & is waterproof & buoyant.
IMO an ideal first light for a young child.

I have several of these to give to my kids. I load them with Kirkland AAs. Rechargeable batteries are to pricy for them to misplace.
I paid less than $10 at the time but unsure where. Ebay or AE most likely. Made them into Harry Potter wands once.
