I have been involved with this flashlight collecting and modding for a few years now. I am new to this forum and I can be found on a few other forums using the same user ID, will.
I have an collection of Maglite Mini-Mags - 2AA, 2AAA, and Solitaires. Recently I started with Solarforce lights, mostly the L2 series.
I bought a mini lathe years back to work on HO trains. I found that I could also do some flashlight modifications as well. One of my other hobbies is woodworking and I combined that with flashlights. I found that I could modify the bodies by applying an exotic wood covering yielding a completely unique light.
I was able to find a plating shop or two that would nickle plate and chrome plate lights. I removed the anodize, polished them and had them plated. I got carried away and had one of my solarforce lights 24k gold plated, really different looking.
I'll dig through some of my pictures and post a few here.
Welcome to BLF, holly. The tactical ring on the light you referenced is the 4 sided metal ring towards the back of the flashlight. It is supposedly there as an anti-roll feature, although on the XT20 it is rather redundant - with that head on the flashlight, it ain't gonna roll anywhere. Here's another light where the tactical ring is actually quite effective; without it, the light will roll quite freely when you set it down:
On both lights, the tactical ring can be unscrewed to remove.
