Video Review: Rayus C01 Nichia 219 AAA EDC flashlight w/ washing Machine Test and 2 story drop. In HD!

Review: Rayus C01 Nichia 219 b11 AAA keychain Flashlight.

Ok, so here’s my review of the new Rayus C01. Rayus is a brand new flashlight manufacturer that as of this review only has three lights. In a collaboration between shiningbeam and Rayus, they sent me this light to check out. The light comes in one of two tints, the light they sent me is the Neutral White tint version of the light and it uses the Nichia 219, which is a higher CRI LED at 83+. This review is primarily the video review, but I’ll throw in a few pictures to make this post a little less boring looking.

In the video, I go over a ton of stuff about the light. There are tint comparisons, beamshots on white walls. Plenty of shots of the light in action around the house, with the scene illuminated only by the flashlight.

There’s also a lot of bad jokes, a drop test from a two story window, and a I throw the light in my washing machine with a load of laundry. WILL IT SURVIVE? You need to check out the video to see!

A few tech specs about the video. It is available in crisp 1080p High Def, but you’ll probably need to set that up by clicking the little gear box on the youtube player. I recently acquired a professional microphone and mixing board, so the audio quality of the voiceover has improved dramatically. And I nixed the music because I hate trying to fight copyright issues, when someone tries to claim “public domain” music as their own. So sorry, but the music was terrible anyway.

And here are some macros of the light.

And last but not least, a tint comparison. Can you guess all the lights? It’s in the video as well, but here’s a photo I also took of the tint comparison.

Thanks for looking!

3:26.. so funny

thanks for the review man!

Thanks, funny review! This would make a nice light for gifting.
Didn’t see it on Shiningbeam website though, so waiting for official announcement?

I was told they were in stock and ready to ship. I’ll contact them tomorrow morning and follow up with the details here.

Great review. 4/5 stars for no cats.
Where can we buy that thing? Direct competition for Tank007 eo9, maybe?

you say the srk is too bright, yet I see it hiding in a corner of the frame later on… :stuck_out_tongue:

what is the machine that you were showing us some wire and IC chip porn?

very humorous.

Nice review! (I also liked the jokes.)

Good stuff! ;)

Awesome review, thanks!

Shingbeam.com. I got the light last Friday, and I think I churned out the video a little too fast. Bryan at shiningbeam told me then that he would have them on his site soon, but that he actually has the lights in. I sent him a follow up email this morning to find out when you could buy them and how much they’d be. Cats! Were you referring to the evil reindeer cat in my Fenix LD15 review?

Ok, I just needed a “hook” for the video. I love my modded SRK. With all the parts it’s my most expensive flashlight! IC chip porn courtesy of this beast. I got it a few years back non-working and slowly fixed it. It works now. That’s the main game PCB, that you see in the video. A few years ago, when I had the room I used to collect and repair arcade games (which is well documented on my Flickr account). Now I just have the one game.

Another nice video. Thanks. Just remind me never to lend you a light.

Now some of my lights I take care of…

Original post updated with some still pictures and more words.

FYI everyone. Bryan at shining beam just responded. This light should be up on his site in two days and it will be priced at 15.75 for CW or NW. NW, of course, is the tint reviewed here.

Thanks for the update mhanlen.
Btw, have you compared the Nichia in this light with another 219 to see how they compare color rendering and tint wise?
From the beamshot pic I’m wondering if this Nichia 219 is not HCRI?

I only have one Nichia and it’s this light. As far as high cri, how can you definitively tell? I’m asking in honesty, is there something your seeing I’m not looking for? The skyray king has “80” CRI noctigons in it. But it’s a warm white light. The way I understand high Cri light, is that it’s not really a tint but a quality of light. And considering I have quite a range of xml2 lights in differing tints, I can say at least to my eye it’s about as neutral white a light as I own. I prefer warmer tints but there’s absolutely nothing ugly about it. The tint comparisons are always a little deceiving… My sky ray doesn’t look quite that orange to a naked eye, but I was more showing where the rayus fell in the tint spectrum.

For example look at the part in the video where in shining a light inside the arcade game. Everything looks nice and natural to me.

Ok everyone. The light is available. I was sent this email today. These are not affiliate links. I’m just copying and pasting my email.

Bummer! US only! Would love to buy this for my key chain. AA light is too big for key chain.
Thanks for the nice review!

Be careful everyone. I just got an efest 10440 in today, and it’s not a button top. A flat top basically brigdes the mechanical reverse polarity protection on the positive end and the light heats up with no light in about 2 or 3 seconds. Could be dangerous. Be careful, and only try button tops. If you watch the video you can see the inside of the battery tube, and see how close the reverse polarity protection ring is… the tolerance is not high.

That's something I've been talking to RAYUS about, it points at a problem with the reverse polarity protection method and will be fixed in the next batch.

Never fear, calvin from IS is here!

Mhanlen: the cats reference refers to the fact a number of viral/successful internet videos have somthing to do with pets (mainly cats)

On the arcade: Thats too funny, that was my favorite game growing up (the GB color edition, that is) never played the original, but it looks fun.

Just doing my due diligence for a brand we may be carrying.
