I have just bought a C8 Zooming Aspheric host to have a go at making a thrower with a de-domed XP-G2 in it. It requires a 16mm MCPCB which is fine as there are plenty of them available but it also needs a 20-21mm driver. Now this would be fine if I was using an XM-L/XM-L2 emitter as there are a number of 20mm 3-3.5A drivers available. However I only want to run the XP-G2 at either the recommended 1.5A or possibly 1.75A (5x 7135 chips) but most of the drivers I have found are 17mm.
Does anyone know of a 20mm driver which is only around 1.5-1.75A? Or am I going to have to de-dome an XM-L2 instead?
I would recommend not to bother with contact boards which basically let the driver hang in there almost no heatsink ability. Adding extra chips on that 20mm driver isn't easy though if you haven't tried before.
I am not sure how deep the pill is. I only purchased the host yesterday so am still waiting for it to arrive. I was just wanting to start organising the other bits ASAP so I don’t have to wait soo long once the host gets here. I might keep looking for a bit and see if I can find something suitable, if not I might go for a de-domed XM-L2 instead.
What sort of difference in throw would I see between a de-domed XM-L2 U2 and an XP-G2?
I have ordered two of the 3*7135 drivers, 3 XP-G2 on Noctigons and 10 7135 chips. I am keen to give it a try. If it doesn’t work I won’t have lost much so its of not much concern to me.
Question now is, the driver has 3*7135s and I am going to add another 1 or 2 to bring it up to 1.5 or 1.75A. Does it matter which ones I piggy back to out of the three existing ones?
haha I am prepared, I have two Nanjg 105c drivers sitting in front of me at the moment for other projects so I can see how small the 7135 chips are. Pretty confident I will be fine. I have got to try at some point.
Mainly because I am new to this and don’t know how far I can push the limits. So I have just stuck to what is recommended by the manufacturer. Once I have got my 3 current projects up and running and am confident with putting it all together and soldering the chips etc. I will probably then look at pushing the emitters to see what can and can’t be done.
Take your pic on mods, then dive in. You can (and will) always do the next one differently. I personally would pic the mod by the modes on the driver rather than just driver size.
