a light for a cardboard box house

I had a cardboard box last week, it came with a 50cm styrofoam ball in it , and immediately my little son confiscated the box. so with some cutting and cellotape I quickly made it into a small house that he can sit in. He is now in the process of decorating the house by glueing magazine cut-outs on the inside and outside.

The house needed a light! Just did a quick and dirty (and reversable) 10 minute mod (picture-taking took more time than the mod). This certainly has been done before but then I hope you enjoy seeing my version.

I used a modded sk68 clone (this one happened to have a Oslon SSL80 4000K 96CRI led, 1-mode stock boost driver) and one of the old-school film canisters that come with intl-outdoor orders. I removed the bezel/lens part, placed the flashlight head on the lid of the canister and drew a circle around it. I cut out the circle, fitted the lid on the head (I removed the o-ring first), and screwed the bezel/lens back on.

A paperclip was bent into a hanger:

Ready. I run it with a Duraloop NiMh battery in it.

zoomed out, zoomed in (makes no useful difference)

another paperclip was bent for a hook attached to the roof (btw, I made sure there are no sharp points sticking out).

I hope he enjoys that tomorrow!

Very nice ! Is that a spider web for halloween in the window?

very nice job  I like the paperclip hook

Nice!

too clever! Is that what they call ‘thinking outside the box?’

Lovely job djozz, great choice with the hi-cri emitter!

Both my kids love cardboard boxes, the fun they had when we recently got a new fridge-frezer was immeasurable

OMG! Cuteness overload! Showed that pic to the ol’ ball n’ chain and she said that your son will remeber that for the rest of his life. Great job

One suggestion:

Try unscrewing and removing the lens holder and lens from the SK68 before you put the film canister on. So the film canister would go over the bare LED. Without the lens and front of the bezel, the light should be substantially brighter.

Some cuteness now and then is a good balance for the usual flashlights-on-steroids on BLF

Good point, did not think about that, it is way brighter and it makes the light coming out more even as well.

But brightness was not exactly the point here, it is even too bright like this, so I keep the lens in for this use :-)

I'd have to explain Halloween to him then :-) , we do not celebrate that in Holland. He actually likes spiders a lot, or any creepy animal for that matter

Genius!

Thanks for sharing!

Nice job on hte SK68 “Lantern” conversion

  • now that 50cm Styrofoam ball… Hmmmm… i can think of some uses for that too… maybe something for measuring light… >)

Bummer, I thought Holland was a civilized place… Halloween has taken over over here. I saw Halloween decorations go on sale in early August.

We used to have a lovely holiday between Halloween and Christmas called something like “Thanksgiving” where family and friends got together and stuffed their faces full of yummy home cooked meals followed by vigorous burping and belching and patting of bulging bellies. It seems to have disappeared and has been replaced with something called “Insane Shopping Violence Day” where people go out at insanely early times and try and kill each other to save a couple of bucks on yet another large screen TV that they don’t need.

Fantastic job! I miss the days when my kids could spend hours with something as simple as a cardboard box. Enjoy it while it lasts, it passes quickly.

Great work on the light on your part and Great work by your son on putting a box to work for him.
Looks like you 2 will have many more projects to work on

Heck, I still can. But it helps if it has beer in it…

Since when did rocket fuel come in cardboard boxes?

Actually, I’ve built several rockets out of cardboard boxes… that long triangular Fedex box in particular. Ever see a cardboard box fly at Mach 1+ speeds?

One particularly memorable box rocket that a friend of mine built and flew on one of my motors was really spectacular. When the motor burned out it was going several hundred miles an hour and the ejection charge blew early. The top came off and the full airflow rammed into the box and instantly shredded it into confetti… which fell from the sky for over 30 minutes…
