I have 2- AA Minimags, one old style camo and one tech style camo that I would like to mod and sell and would like suggestions from those possibly interested what I should do. The options are limited by the size of the battery and the host. Possible LEDs are XML U3 1C, U2 1A, 1C, 1D, T6 3C, 3D, XP-G2 1D, 3D, and Nichia 219. Triple any of these except U3. Also available is an XRE R2. I use the Nanjg 101 1.4A driver from illumination supply and add or subtract chips for the desired current level (max 2.9A, stock is 1.4A). I have some reflectors on order from fast tech (both smo and op) as well as 10^ tir optics and triple optics from IS and possibly an aspheric if the one I will soon have works. Battery choices are 14500 or 14650 w/spacer or cut down battery tube (camo won’t match at cut line). Milled fins are a possibility as well but will add a shiny element to the light. If you have any other choices you’d like, let me know and I’ll respond with their likelihood. The price range will be in the $50 -$75 range depending on what mods are actually done.

Hunters will want the camo left on as it disguises the light at night. Silver would stand out. I wont be buying this light but my suggestion would be XM-L 3C tint or XP-G2 4D tint. Depending whether the user wanted a floody light or more concentrated would determine the LED used. I'm also a fan of the 10 degree TIR for several reasons. Compact, can be used with either led, for lazy people like me the ones I use are pressed in so no mucking around with lenses or lens retainers and has a good all around beam pattern. If length is no issue i would use the larger battery for longer run time. I'm not sure if you saw my thread on the mini C8's where I ran the 10 degree TIR's with Identical drivers and batteries. The only difference was the XP-G and XM-L LED's. A flashlight like this does not need to be driven at 10,000 amps so around 1.4 amps would be fine and also give a better run time. depending on how much a triple nichia running on a pair of nimh would run, i may be interested in the old school. my uncle has a bday coming up, and hes, uh, slightly stuck in korea
I don’t think 2 nimh’s could run a triple Nichia but I could lengthen the tube with some brass which would patina without turning your hand green so that’s a possibility. I have one of the leather holsters that might be better for that mod(thru hole, no bottom). I have several colors also, red, blue, green, purple, silver, peuter grey, black, and the pink “until there’s a cure” ones. All but pink and camo in AAA and all but camo in solitaire. Green or grey might be cool with a brass handle.
I have a single Nichia AA Minimag. I’ll throw some nimhs in it and test the current and output compared to a few other lights I have but my nimhs are just cheapo radio shack cells. I can measure run time and post the results here. Light with nichia and holster shipped ~$35 shipped(parts are $25). Ill run the current test tomorrow evening when I get home. A boost driver would help but would add to the cost. Cheaper and brighter(with less run time) would be with 3 –2/3AA nimhs.

I wonder if camo just doesn’t sell well here. I guess the point of the thread was to find out if there was a particular mod that a camocrombie would like. I’d need tI hear from the hunters to know. Sorry. Did you say something? Heh, heh. I did mention 3 replies, didn’t I?(of which you were #3). Ever notice that most of the comments in threads I start are usually me responding to… Me. I’ve heard(probably from myself) that talking to oneself is a sign of insanity.
Pulsar, 2 nimhs won’t cut the mustard direct drive so it would need some kind of boost driver that requires space and limits us to 1 x nimh. IS has boost driver that delivers 500mA at 1.3V(down to 300mA at .9V) but with only cell run time would be unacceptably short(less than 1/2hour). 2/3AA nimhs have ~650mAh capacity so 3 of them would run longer at 700 mA and be brighter as well. 3 full AA nimhs catapult capacity up over 2Ah. I like small lights which is why I use lithium but this is an example of what you have to do to use nimhs to power a high Vf led like the Nichia 219.
I think the next BLF driver should be one that has a voltage range from .9 volt to 4.2 volts, 3 mode with ultra low and be about 12mm in diameter. Bugger forgot I dont exist here. Sorry.
You’re not invisible. I see you quite clearly( and you’re making a helluva racket too). You sort of described the driver I scrambled for the blue AAA mini just finished. 3 mode, 10mm Dia , single liion. I don’t think I could cut up a boost/buck driver that way so don’t even ask. And stop crying, the dog will think its a siren and start to howl.
