AAA batteries 20 years old and no leaks

These were left in a volt meter for 20+ years. Completely dead. No leaks whatsoever. I guess they dont make them like they used to.

This is carbon zinc type battery.
Voltmeter has small current discharge and battery electrolite has dried without disolving zinc negative electrode of battery so it didn’t leak.

It says mercury cadmium on it.

Regardless of the battery type, shouldn’t a steady (if slight) discharge result in a graceful death of the cell?

Philips ‘made in belgium’ with estimated year of use before 25 years.
It still has more than 1.5 volts and works -

Wow, that really says a lot about current alkaline batteries O_O

It’s all about dispose and buy again, and again there is no money stream in creating long lived products.
