I currently have the ThruNite Ti which boasts 160LM and only weights 16 grams.
While it is indeed an amazing light for $20, I have found the twisting to get to full beam a bit much.
Now I want the same thing, but with clicky switch. As it turns out, this is the only option at the same weight: http://www.cnqualitygoods.com/goods.php?id=2134
This DQG not only has the clicky, but is smaller and more powerful at 210LM. I don’t like how it drops 60LM after being on high for 10 sec, but it seems really well built and even includes an add-on battery tube for adding a second AAA
A close second is the ThorFire TS07 which seems like a knock off (since the specs are almost identical, but its heavier at 29grams) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PFGGDWI
Any feedback on this is great. Feel free to chime in with other comparable models.
Bout to pull the trigger on the DQG, but dont understand the options:
Color Temperature: CW—6500K, NW— 4000K
Does that mean the 6500 is brighter, farther, but also hotter?
I should add that I live at 11k ft near the continental divide so ultralight is key. I saw the DQG Fairy, which may be lighter but takes weird expensive batteries
Thanks, that Lumintop does look nice with the black finish. Its a bit longer than my Thrunite Ti, but it must be well built to still weigh in at 15grams
What confuses me is the max 70LM listed spec. Then the review guy used a 10440 and got 300LM? gEEZ
I absolutely have to beat my current Thrunite Ti maximum 160Lumens though and the Lumintop seems like a strong contender. I should add though, that my torch always stays on the keychain and needs to be the same size as Thrunite Ti or smaller (70 mm)
All LEDs start out blue and have different phosphors overlaid that absorb the blue and reemit a spectrum that looks white. The higher color temps(K) have less added so lose less output from the absorption. You won’t find the highest flux bins in warm white tints so if absolute highest output is wanted then stick to the higher K value color temperatures. It’s confusing because higher color temp (K) corresponds to cooler (more blue) while lower color temp corresponds to warmer tints. Go figure. Think ice blue or firelight yellow.
if it’s for the keyring i’d buy the dqg because it’s way smaller and very light . Brightness on a keychain to me is pretty meaningless .weight size ,tint and durability are probably more important to me .
i’ have the NW dgq clicky on my ketchain and i like it …i like the tint too . i don’t think of it as being bright …like i said i don’t care …bright means the battery is toast in minutes
I am getting the DQG as it seems to be unmatched. I will gladly pay extra to hit 210 lumens at that size/weight.
The brightness is the #1 thing for me though. I am an ultralight backpacker and see the kind of “pitch-black” conditions most folks will never know. Add wild animals to this and the light becomes more and more important. A flashlight is the #1 line of self defense and 160Lumens is the minimum needed to temporarily blind someone. Most crime happens at night, since criminals use darkness to their advantage.
I have to ask, as an ultralight backpacker, you know that not only weight counts, but function… If you double the weight and increase the size by 25% you get an exponential amount more of lumen available…
I do not know where the 160lumen figure for temp blinding someone comes from, but the EC11 by Nitecore (random example, for size and weight, not pushing this light) gives you over five times the brightness… So this would be rather more functional for self defense than the DQG for instance. Or if you can find a DQG Tiny 18650 clicky version, you would have up to 300 lumen available with a quick triple click, and a huge increase in run time.
I think if you are going to use this for a primary light for backpacking, that is fine and up to you, but a relatively small increase in both size and weight, gain an exponential leap in functionality in lighting your way…
EDIT: I say this not doubting your needs, but being one that has lived off what I am carrying at times, enjoying the increased capability that sometimes a SMALL increase in weight brings. It is like the Swiss Army Knife, the single blade ones do not sell well, the fully loaded either, but in between, those are the most useful. The AA format or 2 AAA can bring much more run time than just a single AAA.
thanks, that Nitecore looks great although not a keychain light. That and the DQG Tiny 18650 clicky version is more of something to have at home by the door or packed in luggage. I will probably get one for that.
Guess I’ve been spoiled by the smallness of my current Thrunite Ti. Everything else seems huge in comparison.
Great link to the MBI stuff, I had not seen them before…
No, there are definite levels between what you can “keychain” carry and carry otherwise, so the EC11 is above the keychain threshold.
I do not think you will go wrong with the DQG AAA clicky at all, just wanted to bring up options. Let us know what you think of it when you get it… the more reviews the merrier…
I’ve also been eyeing picking up another DQG. In my opinion a HUGE advantage is the neutral white tint. But I was torn between the clicky and the twisty. I usually prefer clickies but I read some less than favorable comments about it a year or so ago. But if most of you are happy with it it’s probably a pretty safe bet. And is cnqualitygoods.com still the best source of genuine of DQGs at a decent price?
Agreed with ReManG. I EDC a good 10440 light. I appreciate the minimalism, but when it’s your hide on the line anything short of enough can leave you dead. I’ve experienced the vagaries of the weather in the high Rockies, and you couldn’t get me out of sight of a main road there with a AAA/10440 light and one cell if you were chasing me with a pitchfork and a shotgun. YMMV, but I hope you’ll reconsider this choice.
