Advertising on BLF

What does Mr Farty think should be done to improve BLF?

The ads here don’t seem to be a problem to me, and SB your policy sounds great, and a good compromise to get your site paid for without bothering users with popups or glaring flashers. I also don’t see any problem with using adblock, those of us who care about helping the site can make up for those who don’t want to see any ads badly by clicking on some ads, or just allow/click on the ads when you are on a network you dont care about tracking from. If/when I’m over on some security minded friends networks, I may want to browse traceless as well and not have any ads in respect of their desires, but usually I’ll allow the ads.

My feeling is, who here doesn’t search Fast Tech for example or some other one or more times/day when you are reading reviews/issues here with lights? May as well generate BLF some funds for it when you are going to do it anyways, right?

No problem with the ads for me, they’re not obtrusive and don’t interfere with the loading of pages or general browsing the site.
Good job admin!

Please refer to post 3.

In that case refer to post 7, also you don’t seem to want to answer the question

The ads are at least relevant to the forum. Turn off your adblock for a whole day and then see if the ones here are still annoying.

Other mainstream sites are plastered with animated gif or flash ads for dick pills and psychics and MAKE $10,000 AN HOUR! REAL ESTATE SECRETS 'THEY' DON"T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT!!!111one.

It’s perfect the way it is sb, don’t change unless you need to cover more overheads!

Yep, this is a huge one. BLF wouldn’t be what it is without its resident group of friendly experts. Also the users who politely ask questions and say thanks for the answers. Many thanks to all of our friendly, polite members for their support in this regard!

Another way to support BLF would be to carefully follow the simple BLF rules, to avoid dirty content, fighting, and hurt feelings, which can take up a lot of my time to resolve and lead to offended users and decreased membership. Thanks to the majority of our users that do follow the rules.

My biggest complaint is that when I see a flashlight I like on one of the ads and click it, it takes me to all the flashlights and not just the one I'm interested in... Laughing

Er, something I should have mentioned earlier about posting good content. I can’t remember where I read it now, but I saw a very insightful article explaining the economics behind sites like StackOverflow (programming Q&A site).

Basically, to make a site like this work, you need three types of users:

  • People who ask good questions.
  • People who post well-written answers (and reviews, or otherwise add useful info to a discussion).
  • People who search for questions and answers online.

The majority of the actual money usually comes from that third category, the people who aren’t posting and probably don’t even have an account. Because of this, you can probably produce more income for BLF by writing a good review than you could by clicking on ads for a whole year. Clicking the ads helps, but good posts can produce an effect a thousand times bigger.

Very true, content is king.

ugh… I rather see the ads on the side than pay for membership to this forum… sometimes it’s useful if they post something new and interesting.
I’m pretty sure this site doesn’t run on cookies and milk, it need some $$ to run it free and smooth as it is now

As a newb into the realazation that I was a flashlight fan before I stumbled into this sanitycheckofaforum I have only found two websites anywhere that even slightly interest me that DO NOT have annoying ads. This one and one other. BTW, the oher site is a pay site that benefits a trail building org. close to home.

SB, my two cents worth is the ads here are unobtrusive and extremely avoidable if so desired and I really appriciate your eforts to keep them that way.

Thank you
