Alternative to Helping Hands

Or as I refer to them as “hindering hands”. They’re the elcheapo version, but I don’t see the more expensive version being any better because they use “roach” clips as well. They are fine for holding thin material as we all know. Almost useless for larger objects. Any suggestions? I need all the help i can get when it comes to soldering. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been using spring clamps like the ones below with the rubber tips removed to hold parts together when soldering them for my contest light.

I think I’ve got a couple of those clamps tekwyzrd. It never occurred to me they would be of any help. Thank you both for your suggestions.

I used a “helping hands” all of an hour before I got tired of it and tossed. It’s just not stable enough.

I bought one of these and never looked back.

Being rather frustrated with the positionability of the cheapo versions I’ve been experimenting around with two magnetic dial indicator bases, the arm style like this . Stuck some clips on the end but have been working on interchangable clamps. The ability to loosen the knob and put it exactly where I want then lock it is very nice, and the magnet base means they can be moved around on a steel plate for lots of range.

I use a Panavise, they work very well and with the ball clamp base they can rest in about in normal position.

What I often do is take a rubber band and wrap it several times around the handles of a pair of needle nose pliers (or whatever size pliers are appropriate). This forces the jaws to squeeze shut allowing you free hands to do what you want.

This man gave you the best advice. I use this Proxxon:
