I got my SC31B during one of the flash sales, so it was a steal. But I’d still appreciate its simplicity and solid build quality for a more normal price.
The recent sale on the S11C was initially tempting, but after a closer look, I’d rather put that money toward getting something that’s solid, a known quantity, and not outsourced. Cheap is good, but not mostly for the sake of being cheap.
I’d be a lot closer to buying another light like the SC31 Pro or FC11 if they didn’t have direct drivers. So close to being the perfect and versatile all-rounders, except they’ll still act like soap box derby cars from the moment they’re switched on and left on, or like a light from decades passed.
Having only recently acquired a Sofirn light with the newer packaging, I see that this was the “winner” from that unofficial slogan competition. Was this ever acknowledged, and did Photonica claim their prize? j/k :money_mouth_face:
Something about the packaging also makes me wish that an orange color scheme was also incorporated into the current battery wraps, instead of the black/gold motif that’s more reminiscent of a 70’s cigarette brand. The white Wurkkos cells are almost identical, but at least work in a pinch of color thanks to their logo, and are consistent with the packaging and branding.
The black/gold wraps lack that same connection, or consistency with the Sofirn brand. Even the older space theme had it, and some flair.
I hope development of the successor to SP10S (1xAA) is getting along nicely and that soon we get an SP10R (660nm 1xAA).
My C01R (660nm, 1xAAA) pulls 2.2A from my poor NiMH batteries on high. Also it gets quite toasty toasty in about 40 seconds.
I hope my eneloops can survive this abuse!
But for an AA that current would be a walk in the park.
But I’d also like a light with the same set of attributes in slimmer 18650 form, as true successors to the SP31/32.
Ideally, also with good ATR, given the lower heat capacity. Will be interesting to see if the SP35 “v1.0 final” got the good (SF47) kind, and not the bad (SP33) kind.
after some very fruitful discussions with Sofirn and gchart Sofirn decided to step up from Andúril 1 to Andúril 2 at least for some of their (upcoming) models and revisions. The introduction will be made by their SP36 (Pro) and Q8 (Pro) flashlights as well as by their next revision of the LT1 lantern.
In contradiction to ToyKeeper‘s standard this revised UI will incorporate some upgrades and changes:
Turbo mode works like in Andúril 1 both in Simple UI and Advanced UI
Full power available in Simple UI (Ceiling level defaulted to 150/150) via 2C
Simple UI enhanced by option to toggle Stepped/Smooth Ramp via 3C (not in LT1)
I want to thank gchart for his great and enduring help in making this UI come true. He did all the necessary changes in the source code, did the testing and provided the hex-files to Sofirn.
Following, the UI chart for Andúril 2 on the SP36 (Pro) and Q8 (Pro). The one for LT1 may be following later on.
I did not have any contact to her for months. I doubt that she will revise her standard approach to having a safer Simple UI, though. This revision (is fork the right word?) is tailored solely to Sofirn‘s prerequisites. However, I would not be surprised to soon seeing this firmware flashed onto Wurkkos models, too. Since I did not have any communication with Wurkkos for quite some time I do not know about their next plans.
I do not mean to disagree with you but if I am not totally mistaken there is a multitude of different Andúril 2 versions (on TK‘s repository) already. FireFlies did some customization on the ceiling level, Hank uses a different Turbo activation behavior on his K9.3 and Lumintop even mixed up the order of appearance in the blinky&utility modes section in their FWAA light (temp check is on third and not on second position). The latter one may be a result of using a very old fork of Andúril 2? I can only guess.
These many versions we now get to see could be a result of many users being dissatisfied with the new Turbo activation behavior in TK‘s standard.
Yes, a couple of things have changed. Temp check after batt check is a major improvement but not a very invasive change. Easy to see the new order of appearance.
IMO, new forks that introduce major changes should get new names. But I guess my opinion is an isolated one. Doesn’t look like anyone else cares.
