I updated my Xiaomi MI4 yesterday from V7.1.2.0.KXDMICK to V7.5.1.0.MXDMIDE (phone was bothering me for several days to upgrade) and after that I have no mobile network, can’t make/receive calls or messages, if someone calls me he gets user is inaccessible msg…
I found something about resetting the APN settings - didn’t help. I tried to go back to old rom, copied to phone, renamed to update.zip but phone doesnt want to update again.
Only thing that I am left with is to do a factory data reset and I really really don’t want to lose all stuff from there, pics, messages, contact, emails…
I don’t want to switch to cyanogen or some custom rom, want to stay on official rom and preserve all my data.
There was one update eight months ago or so, I didn’t do backup then and everything was fine I think I only had to reinstall facebook app and that’s all, nothing was lost, and I didnt have to wipe everithing before or after that update, I didn’t thought something could go wrong, those are all official updates from xiaomi and they were available/offered thru my phone I didnt download anything questionable on my PC transfered that to the phone and installed.
Now that backup, wouldn’t it be erased like everything else after factory reset (that wipes out everything) ? I don’t have a way to backup data from the phone to my PC because MI PC Suite doesn’t work !
Can you give some specifics how to do this?

And just use a USB cable to get all files of the device?

dump it on a NAS and create a email account from google for example to have all your contacts safe (you do not have your contacts in google account but really on the sim card? pull the sim and your contacts are safe.)
I did a “whipe cash”, that did not solve the problem.
Connecting it via USB is not much of a help either because to be able to access to sms messages, contacts etc and do backup the phone has to be connected to PC via Mi PC Suite and that piece of crap doesn’t work properly, keeps telling me I should update my phone without any specifics. Other than that I can create FTP server on the phone and then access to files via firefox on a PC, but those are just individual files, hard to find anything there, I did pull some files, 68 of them but those are like:

Yes No? Make an google account and synchronize, contacts saved and really easy to put back after reset.
Yes yes? Synch your account, and use wifi to place your files in another spot (make a folder on a pc visible on the network (disconnect internet cable) and dump all there.
No not use their software, just connect and go into settings USB and select mass storage device, it should or could give you new device popping up in your computer, copy paste all you want to keep.
If wifi works, download an backup app that does not need root in the play store and backup al on sd card.
OH CR@P I oogled the specs of our phone, no mem card (make a mental note, next phone must have a card slot saving you a heap of trouble)
If you cant select mass storage device and WIFI is not working, you are in a lot of trouble, emailing yourself the best pics and important data is out then.
Check if the phone can handle a USB drive plugged in via the correct USB female to micro USB male cable. this could be your last hope.
And please, back up before doing things, get a phone with card slot and just create a google account for backing up of a lot of stuff, it takes 2 minutes to setup a new phone with a google account, even a lot of apps are done for you. just dont use it for your defence contracts and you’re fine
My friend that often fix android phone said that xiaomi is quite buggy for their firmware, unless you do a backup before updating then you can revert to original state before updating.
Try flashing the phone and reboot it to factory reset

yes, I have a google account and MI account that should contain everything backed up but I can’t log in (via PC) to MI Cloud because I haven’t logged in in a long time and now it requires account authentication by sending sms on a number that I can not use because of described problems and the sim card is one of those smallest tiny micro size that I can not use in any of my other older phones.
Yeah, no sd card slot, that was the biggest drawback but I just thought 16GB would be ok since I dont use the phone for music.
I will try tomorrow to sort this out, too late now and I am a bit pissed so there’s a chance I could slam this thing into a wall
Check your current MAC address. The update may have accidentally wiped or changed it. If it’s not the same with the original (should be on the phone label) then you’d have the network problems as you described.
If that is the case then you can copy the original and change it back, there’s a way to do it (I did it but don’t remember the details).
EDIT: Doh! I meant IMEI like the following posts. But this is probably irrelevant now as OP checked and confirmed it’s the same.
It is possible the IMEI is corrupt from the upgrade. Which would mean you would need to root the phone and find ways to restore it. Before any of that, I recommend you reset the phone.
You should use the Xiaomi software to connect to your PC in case there are such problems. Mine was ‘bricked’ too (my fault not the software update as I kept removing ‘useless’ system apps until it would not boot) but using the PC software allowed me to access the phone, download another ROM (I used a beta rom) and it flashed all right.

So your contacts are safe in the google cloud.
Your bought apps are also safe and can be reinstalled after reset.
This leaves only your files as pics.
Use that ftp connection and usually pics are stored in folder DCIM. Folder downloads can be useful too.
Then hope your imei will be restored if you do factory reset because I agree with above that seems the issue.
Google it, you’re probably not the only one having had this problem
A reset is not going to restore the IMEI. A reset cleans out other problems that may have occurred after the update. Try installing the XIAOMI software on your PC. Take a look at this Miui 14
I regret choosing my recently received Xiaomi Mi4s
Because of impending dropping of the 2G bands where I live, I needed to get a new phone. I looked at too many and in the end selected Xiaomi because their products are good quality and reliable.
But I missed fully checking the specs.
- No Micro SD card memory expansion. (Has two sim slots)
- Non-Standard O/S.
Type “C” Usb reversible connector, now another damn cable to manage.
Shoulda stuck with a more “standard” Android phone.

I don’t believe anything is wrong with IMEI, since I have not heard of any reports of it going kaput on Mi devices. Only phones with possible IMEI issues are AFAIK Sony and Samsung ones, and problems are caused by incompetent user trying to use custom firmware and ignoring a lot of “Backup TA/EFS partition” warnings.
First, you should get access to Mi account. Unless you have specifically disabled backup, all of your contacts, messages, call history, pictures, videos and general settings are in Xiaomi cloud. They even backup app installations. Depending on the sim slot in an old phone you have, it is often possible to just tape micro sim in. It works perfectly on my backup SE K750. Or you could make adapter from plastic card. Print paper template, cut it to shape with xacto knife and temporarly glue sim to it. Of course, simplest option is to find someone with micro sim phone (every non-Apple device in the last 3-4 years). Your cellular provider should also be able to set you up with an adapter.
Next, I’m going to need some info about you computer before I can give you accurate directions on what to do next. What version of Windows are you running? Win 7 will make things easier, while Win 10 needs some driver signature checks disabled before you can revive your Mi. Or maybe you run Linux, in which case all of the annoying prep work for flashing phone is not even necessary.

- IMEI is fine, it’s the same number in the phone as on the box that it arrived
- MI PC Suit - as mentioned in my previous post I have this installed on my PC but its not working, problem is already reported here > Miui 14 everything is updated but it just keeps showing “Update your device before connecting”
some news are that my old Nokia 6120 is afterall capable to accept those small SIM card (tose old Nokia phones just keeps amazing me) so I was able to receive confirmation code for my MI account (that thing is horrible made, pages reload by them selves at random, etc.) anyway that ended up to be half a wast of the time, it looks like all SMS’s are there, pics also but only 12! contacts out of 300 and something.
at least I know that SIM card is OK, and I tried other number (SIM) in MI4, does not work, so, it’s the phone…
Again, thanks for the effort everyone puts into this issue, I will re read this thread and try out what I did not already, but it all points out that I will have to do complete wipe, reinstall google play store (last time I did that it was a huge pain in the butt) and all other apps…
