Any recommendations for a non-threatening EDC knife?

Hi!

I have a couple of friends who are very queasy about knives, and I’d like to get a non-threatening pocket knife that I can use without triggering a fit of hysteria. I saw this Sanrenmu T11 on fasttech that looks like it would fit the bill, but I’m wondering if there are any better options out there. I’d like to keep the price under $30 USD; the cheaper the better, if possible.

For reference, they found the Sanrenmu 763 to be extremely threatening :expressionless:

Thanks for your time.

Swiss Army Knife .

Thanks for the fast response! I forgot to mention: I have a SAK Tinker and I love it, but I’d like a locking blade that offers a little more cutting power and control.

Kershaw Chill
Great ‘little big’ knife

Why do you care ? All little knifes can look threatening, if you use it well it should not frighten people…
But yes sheepsfoot bladeblade may usually looks less aggressive.

+1

There are enough types with a locking blade, no one was ever offended by mine. Even my Opinel has raised an eyebrow every now and then, my SAK never.

Sanrenmu 401

Yet another vote for a locking swiss army knife. Perhaps the Hunter, Centurion, or Picnicker?

Benchmade 940 series. Very non threatening (in the plain silver blade) and very light weight. I have carried one in one of many offices I have been in and never freaked out the muggles that I have a knife in my pocket.

I am ashamed to admit that I was unaware of there being locking varients of the Swiss Army Knife . The Centurion looks like a perfect locking replacement for the Tinker. Thanks for the advice!

or

Fast Tech stock them in a few different colours. $7.53

Maybe this-

~$12 - no sharp point and they’ll be inquisitive as to what it is for, it might look non-threatening but it is wickedly sharp and even though it has no pronounced point it has enough sharp bits for anyone, blade is tough as hell as well.

Alternatively ask them how they eat without using a knife, do they freak out at the dinner table?

Have a look at the offerings from Buck. Could go with a lock back like the Buck Colleague or the Scholar. Then there’s the traditional pocket knife style like the Trio or Canoe. All these blades are less than $20.

The Blackie Collins series looks like a workmans tool, I always thought they could be inconspicuous. There are many other Colonial knives thst fit this profile, and they are quality blades.

Get em a 2 blade pocket knife…my grandpa used to carry one like this

non-threatening…but still a knife, just keep it sharp

The Swiss Army Knife is the gold standard for non-threatening knives. My boss thinks only thugs carry knives (I’m certain there’s a story there) and even he has a SAK.

EKA has several knives that are very good, reasonably priced and non-threatening. They are even perfect as gifts to people that are not very much into knives. Perfect tools for the occasional gardener or as practical non-threatening EDC. Easy to sharpen 12C27 steel with great performance.

EKA Swede 8 or 10 would be a good choice. Robust and ergonomic.

Or if you want to indulge, EKA Swede 7. My personal favorite. I don't own one, but I have gifted two to friends on special occasions.

EKA Swede 88 Masur is very special light-weight slicer with a very thin blade. And almost offensively non-threatening...

... And I have a Victorinox Spartan on my keychain, along with a Nitecore Sense AA.

I like the EKA knives too,
you might take a look at some classic Grohmann folder or one of my favorite knife shape: Sodbuster, they are cheap and reliable, also avalible in different non threatning colors.
Don’t know many brands in Northern America but Case seems to be reliable. “German Eye” knives are of good quality but you’d pay some extra for that.
I like the Lionsteel Opera Mini very much but I don’t know if it’s avalible at a resasonable price in US/CA.
If budget is most important I would choose a solid sodbuster style knive.

When I’m going into such a place that a “normal” knife would frighten people, I like to carry one of these. I had one as a child & the current one was a gift from a relative.

It’s got a trick lock which keeps it closed. If anyone is fearful, hand it to them and challenge them to make it dangerous. (well, it’s a swallowing hazard closed…) I’m sure by now everyone here knows the trick, but it’s a way to keep a blade in your pocket without freaking out “certain” people.

(Not to brag, but notice the mouseover? I found a new onclick trick, to throw you to the page on which the pictures are posted. Use your Back button/function to get back here, and you can right-click->view image to see the big picture… Quote this post for details…)
