Bad switch on new Thrunite ti, repair ?

My pal ordered US a pair of ti’s.
One switch is bad. Low is iffy , works seldom, Hi is ok.

The other one is perfect. It goes from Lo-Hi in one smooth motion with the light staying lit, no momentary off between lo & hi.

Any repairs the avg DIY can do?
He’s against attempting a return to ebay.

Thx

Unscrew the head and look at where the positive pole of the battery will go. There is a small piece of metal you may have to bend up a little bit.

Thanks for that.

MAN this thing is TINY!
And bright.

If ya need, here’s a ti 3/60 for $11.99 shipped (where we got these)

I finally got this thing under a decent magnifier, I bent the lil hook up, No joy, same same.
Works on high only now, never low mode…

Ideas ?

Sounds like you bent the tab the wrong way. Low is when the button on the battery touches just the first tab. High is when the button on the battery touches the first tab and presses it into the second tab. So if it only goes on high, that means that both tabs are touching, which they shouldn’t be if you bent the top tab upwards. Something doesn’t sound right. Can you do a photo?

I had to bend the tab on my original Ti Firefly, and I also had to put some teflon tape on the threads to keep the head from wobbling. That was about 2 years ago and it’s been a champ ever since. I still take it on road trips as a backup.

Quite a few people seem to get bad Ti switches. The failure rate on those lever springs is just too high. They should have used a coil spring.

Clean it… clean under the little leaf spring (the thingy you’re bending up) with a piece of paper and alcohol for example and clean the threads. Mine had issues and cleaning the threads got it working again. (And what Racer said.)

I’ll try that.

The actual spring is the foam pad.
.

How do ya think the variable resistance works in that arrangement ?

Nope, they’re not touching.

I can’t get a shot right now, my camera is, err lost at the moment.
[I’ve bought 3-Nikon 4800’s, seems they get lost right after a criminal pal of the kid comes over]

Reviving a very old thread. Does any of you recall the 3-60 version of this had the same switch mechanism as the firefly version, which uses a bent tab to switch mode?

I have the firefly version which is still working great. I found an old 3-60 version, which probably my kids left a duraleak in there. Now its having 2 issues -

  1. The battery is stuck in the tube, no clue how to get it out
  2. The foam ring has compressed maybe due to the battery acid - how do I change it?
  3. The switching mechanism tab seems to be pushed in and glued again due to the battery acid I believe.

sometimes all it takes is to clean off the end of the body tube with a dry paper towel

a more thorough cleaning includes using a q tip moist with alcohol (not dripping into the head) to clean inside the head where the body tube makes contact, as well as the end of the body tube

the goal is to remove excess lubricant, which can block electrical contact. Do not add more lube, just test the light as is, after cleaning the contact points in the head and end of body tube.

good luck!
let us know if that solved the problem
