Beamshots - MTG2 in 7g5v2 with collimator head

I have 3 pills for the 7G5V2 - one green SST-90, one xml2 and one MTG2.

I’ve posted beamshots of the first two, here’s the third. Tailcap current with 2xCGR18650CH is >3A. Lux at 1 meter (after 30seconds running) is ~30k vs 180K for de-domed xml2 on copper sinkpad. stock it did ~85k.

Sorry about the rain…

The waffle effect is slightly more visible in real life than in this photo.
edit: and it is VERY distinct on a close white wall.

This emitter is VERY usable with aspheric. A LOT of light gets wasted…but the beam size is absolutely HUGE compared to XML.

For reference…here’s the xml2

With just a tiny bit of de-focusing you wouldn’t have any waffle effect. Swapping the cutter PCB to a (thicker) aluminum sinkpad might be enough.

I like the tint

Nice work! I was wondering about how this bad-boy would do under an aspheric. Not exactly a super thrower, but a massive spot like that with no spill would be useful. I think the defocusing would be a good thing to get a smooth spot.

me too

I’ve gone from preferring ~6k to 5k. These 5k MTG2s seem a bit different than the 5k XML2s I’ve been using (note the one above is de-domed). Sometimes they seem just a little cooler.

Yes, and every bit closer would be a bit more light OTF.

In fact, I’m starting to think my ideal setup for this emitter will end up being a ~78mm aspheric and ~2/3 focal length.

I like the MT-G2 5k tint, it’s very close to Nichia 219. The CRI is lower, but tint is very close. It cuts through haze quite well. I find it reaching further than the candelas would predict.
I get 50kcd from one in my UF-T90 and it reaches about the same as it did with the 70k SST-90; with a double-sized hot spot. And colours look real too. Nice!
Based on your ‘fun-times’ dedoming that beast, I’ll be leaving mine intact.

Yes, definitely leave it intact :Sp

Slicing could be done, but the gains aren’t worth it, and you’ll get artifacts (though only ‘white wall’ noticeable).

I know what you mean about the measurements not telling the story. This 7g5v2 is a much tamer current than my SVD7, but there’s still SO much light coming out - the 30k from this thing seems like more to my eye. I can’t wait to see what it looks like at ~250 meters…

Don’t know why my remarks didn’t post, but will give it another go. I, too, like the idea of doing a build in a new pill. Whenever I can match a compatible pill with the torch, I keep the OEM build and just do another. I can always compare my build with the OEM for only the cost of another pill, which is usually very nominal… Thanks…

I know, 30kcd out to 250m sounds rather dim, but it surprises me how much extra reach you can get from a warmer tint. My latest MT-G2 mod is around 35kcd and it’s got good reach even though most of lumens are in the spill. In hindsight, I should have grabbed a couple more emitters in the GB. I’m hoping these will be picked up by more sellers soon. I have more host ideas
I need to get my mod post up before someone scoops me

I have two I’d sell, $21ea plus actual cost of shipping.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

unfortunately, they aren’t available for sale for this light, afaik. I got a non-functioning one from md-lightsource, just because he had replaced it under warranty for someone. The third I got by buying another complete light

Someday, I’ll get a lathe, and make about 8 out of copper. The stock pill really lacks mass.

Mmmmm, waffles!

Hmmmm....

[looks around for 7G5V2]

Nice beamshots !

nice job, an aspheric I like the beam of

I agree about the mtg-2 the numbers really dont tell the story, even beam shots don’t tell the whole “wall of light” story, its a very subtle, deceptive emitter.

for anyone after an mtg-2, the convoy l2 host will take one, if need be I could fit my spare emitter to check the beam.

wow, that build is very nice. I had more or less accepted that aspheric flashlights give square beams, but now you did it, this is much nicer: no spill, round even beam. and so much light in a decent spot! The mtg2 is made for aspherics, I want one (too late for the group buy ). I see that cutter has it in 4000K as well, my favorite colour temperature...

nice shots. i too like the big spot and no spill.

Thinking, but probably pass for now. I have too many projects on the go, they’d probably sit here for months. Thanks for the very nice offer though.

dthrckt may have some extras still. I just bought one from him. Man, the pictures I’ve seen of the emitter don’t do it justice. It is one big emitter. I kind of giggled a little bit when I pulled it out of the package.

Its huge!

yes, I have 2 available.

and djozz, note that it is actually a skewed hexagon, not a circle. This would be more pronounced but I haven’t blackened the area around the emitter yet.
