I’ll second the recommendation for a Brinyte. My favorite aspheric is the B158 built up with a XP-L HI and FET+1. The throw is similar to the UF-1504 (of which I have also built several), but the B158 is much higher quality and more compact.
That’s a negative on the similar throw. The UF-1504 has a head diameter of 71mm and the Brinyte B158 has a head diameter of 54mm. The 1504 will throw quite a bit further.
I know there’s truth behind that, but in my tests between the two, I didn’t experience enough of a difference in practice to outweigh the quality and compactness of the B158. I don’t have the tools to do lux readings, but the beamshots seemed at least comparable to me. Perhaps there’s more to an aspheric than raw diameter?
Edit: and mod thread here. KKW mentions getting 310K lux from a dd XP-G2 S4 2B.
Based on the head diameters the 1504 might have about 1.7x more beam intensity than the B158. This is significant, but because of how our eyes perceive brightness a 1.7x increase will not blow you away.
True. And because the goal here is “badass” and not necessarily a light that’d you’d be carrying around and using all the time, the UF-1504 would be a good candidate. I just find it too clunky to be practical. But producing a badass beam? Yup!
