Best EDC

Intéressant merci

it;s pretty long though, i wouldn;t consider it pocket sized

That’s what she said…

The de facto budget pocketable 18650 EDC seems the Convoy S2+, configured to your liking with driver and emitter.
I have a couple S2+ and like them a lot, but still I EDC an old Shinning Beam S-mini…! A bit lighter weight and smaller in length and diameter. (emitter to XP-L2 years ago, and had to replace the tail switch)
I’m a bit Luddite here;… still like the simple 3 mode low-med-high with memory. 1.4 Amp top speed is my balance point for run time, heat and light. I always have one of these in my pocket, used daily.

I have an old EagleTac D25LC2 that’s even smaller/shorter. It’s nice but the twist switch is too much trouble for daily use.

Ah the S-Mini. Yes. I have a couple of them, all stock though. Fine lights. I got a hot plate recently, maybe it is time for an emitter swap…
I wonder if they can still be found out there?

Boost driver D4 or D4K (personally I think the D4K is just on the edge of being too big for some of my pockets/purses while the D4 is perfect for anything I wear/carry and I’ve never unexpectedly run out of battery on my D4; I just check the battery each morning and swap it if it’s <3.9 (plus 18650s are so small that if I’m going to be away from home for an extended time, 2 in a case doesn’t add much bulk/weight) but if you always have a lot of storage space on you and want more battery, a D4K is fine too. High output without burning your hand if you leave it on turbo for more than 30 seconds, great UI, basically the best looking small light around.

Maybe an SP35 if you don’t want to swap batteries from a charger or don’t like featureful UIs - if I was gifting a light to a nontechnical person, I’d get them an SP35, but for a hacker, it’d be a D4/D4K/D4S.

Some info for those who thinks as good idea to carry lithium batteries in pants for everyday (EDC). If a battery’s case is damaged or also a water passes inside then may happen a blast.

Alcaline and NiMh are safer. And there is no need in light saber for EDC, except you are a Jedi.

Anyone comfortable carrying a phone in their pocket should feel safe enough with an 18650 or 14500 flashlight. The flashlight battery is better protected from mechanical damage.

Of course bad 14500s are in the news recently, but remember the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Tool aaa for me is the perfect size. Otherwise I alternate between the quark qpax and zebralight sc62w.

Adding second lithium battery arises risks for them. Electronic malfuction, short circuit, physical break, temperature, water and such devices may burn. Besides having active radio device (which does transactions also being not in direct usage) near a body is doubtful for health yours and possible children (as reproduction cells are near).

So I suppose as reasonable to reduce such risks when there is no big need in stronger light (as example, I see no common tasks for >30 lm in cities) and safer battery kind is acceptable.
And to do not carry on yourself mobile phone or Internet communicator (smartphone) without serious need. Most time of their carring and usage is redundant.

The flashlight battery is better protected from mechanical damage.

Metal case of flashlights reduces the chance of external damage, while arises the possible harm. It may work as granade shell, being thin aluminium with doubtful pressure stability. Harder and thicker plastic gives the same.

Also, as phones are more intended for wide usage and developed by more serious companies, so their safety level may be done better. Quality control for batteries, checking their and related electronics state, modes of battery usage, reducing risks when a battery burns inside (what may happen during charging) etc.

Of course bad 14500s are in the news recently, but remember the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Another example of what may do malfunctioning (by some of reasons) devices on lithium was recent Israel sabotage, when mobile devices blasted.

Electronic devices containing pentaerythritol tetranitrate are likely to explode, but that’s largely unrelated to their batteries.

Why do they read 4.5 V?

Yes, good information, and people should be aware that lithium cells can be dangerous if abused (and, rarely, even if not abused).

With this information, it is up to the individual to make the decision for themselves, I’m pleased there are nice “dual fuel” and NiMh options for those that want to use those cells.

“No need” is a strong assumption… I generally try to avoid telling others what they “need”.

I’ve taken to carrying a Wurkkos HD10 with 14500, I rarely “need” the full output, but I’d rather have and not need, than need and not have.
