Here’s more on the topic of radios …
I would buy the Panasonic 1401 because I know how to repair electronics. I would not recommend a 40 year old radio unless you are familiar with electronics repair.
For that purpose you can’t beat Bic. Get one of the soft slip-on cases which block/ hold down the fuel lever or an enclosed waterproof case. Half again the flint needed and the sturdiest most reliable disposable lighter there is. If you use a lighter a lot, look into the refiillable “Clipper”. Also with too much flint, very reliable, sturdy, and has a taller flame but accessories are scarce. Does die rapidly without warning when you run out of fuel.
X-Data has some great radios cheap, along with Tecsun and a few others. CCrane also makes some good ones but a bit pricey, most but not all those are by Sangean. The trend is toward USB rechargables but many use a common replaceable battery. “Todderbert” and some others on YT review radios deeply and accurately. Read the comments and you’ll learn more than you ever wanted to know about the radio being reviewed and how comparable units differ. Many of these are actually better than the older units like my RS DX 398 (Sangean 909 clone) which were tops in their day. There’s also some semi-custom small SDR radios with amazing frequency range and extreme performance but cost a ton and you often have to pay up front and wait for delivery. There’s also some amazing stuff in computer-dongle SDR radios now which do anything and everything better than has been done before at any price.
I already have a bic in an exotac waterproof sleeve, and I have great quality ferro rod, i was just wondering if there are better lighters out there that are far better quality and more waterproof than a bic…
I recently discovered the Xikar brand lighters which I like a lot, unfortunately they are not waterproof hardly at all, and the piezo electric thing is not reliable. I’m okay with the $99 price
Same thing applies for radios. I have a c crane skywave, im curious whether there are better quality and sound, and reception radios out there, battery powered btw
I know I can get an fm antenna to improve some of that.
Also, I do not listen to am, or sw.
That is the failure point that I have seen with this type of lighter… many times. Yes, they don’t work when they get even a little wet…
I have an old Zippo butane that uses a replaceable flint. It works well, but I am not sure they sell them anymore.
But flint lighters don’t do well when they get wet either…
The Sr-286 definitely sounds a bit better than my Skywave (not much you can do with a ~2 inch speaker). It has a little enclosure around the speaker to help with the lower frequencies. I think the audio amp is rated for a bit more output too (FWIW). So far I think it beats the Skywave by a significant margin on FM. Of course, it sounds even better with ear/head phones or an external speaker. With a BlueTooth transmitter dongle and a little Tribit XSound Go BT speaker, it is better than any of my portables.
NOTE, I connected the little Tribit directly using a cable with 1/8"/3.5mm stereo plugs from the radio headphone out to the AUX in . Ditched the dongle. It sounds even a bit better. Plus I don’t need to keep the transmitter charged…
djeep is my favorite lighter.
CCrane gets my vote for a radio.
Djeep has been around since at least the 70s.
I have been using lighters similar to these for a decade. They hold butane well and some have stayed full without being used. I don’t like Bic either even though they are always a great deal. These just are easier on my hands.
Joben make flint wheel jet-flame lighters.
Best I’ve found are these Honest, bought 6 of them a few years ago, gave 4 away, and still have 2 being used. One by the wood. Burner, the other in my rucksack with my stove and pot.
Can’t find them on Ali though, just did the 10 clicks with it, lit every time.
I have some Jobon and Honest lighters from back when DX/KD had lighters.
They are great lighters.
