Better batteries for my SkyRay King?

Just got a SkyRay King….most awesome flashlight I’ve ever had!!! Have read about people having much longer run times than me, wondering what are the best batteries for this thing? I bought some cheap Ultrafire 3200’s off of Ebay for it.

Took it out for a walk last night with fully charged batteries. Never got hot like some report, just warm, but not uncomfortably such. Was pretty bright for about 20 minutes, about the 23 minute mark I noticed it had dimmed quite a bit. After 30 minutes when I got back, it was still working but pretty dim.

Any ideas on batteries for this thing? It’s rated for 80 minutes, but NO FREAKIN’ WAY with these batteries!

Running it on high the entire time, by the way…….

Welcome to BLF! You'll love being here! :)

I'd suggest some Sanyo or Panasonic based protected cells, like XTAR 18700 2600mAh or 3100mAh. I have been using the 2600s in my King and they are very good.

+1 My king luvs the xtar 3100

DON…

Have you tested those batteries in your King to see how long it will burn on bright before it starts dimming noticeably? Obviously the price is 10 times what I paid for the Ultrafires, so I would hope to get a much longer burn time?

Hi, JRS7. Welcome!

It’s funny; I had the same exact thing happen to me with the same exact batteries when I bought mine. lol So I shelved the king for like a month and ordered Panasonic Ortronic 3100 mAh protected cells. Was $25 for two batteries, but a monster like the King deserves the deep well of runtime that Orbtronics provide. Love the batteries - I recommend them without a hitch! Worth every penny.

Running Black and Red TrustFire 2400s protected and they have quite a bit of juice, but haven’t done a straight run w/ ’em…

On a budget, you'd definitely want the trustfire flames 2400mAh from manafont. Will cost you about $22 shipped (free registered >$20). Don't buy TF Flames elsewhere, good chance you'll get the real deal at MF for these.

Longer runtime? Definitely. Real 2400mAh will give you around 1hr++ bright and another hour slowly dimming.

Welcome to the show, JRS7!

Anyone have a source for the Trustfire 2400’s in the U.S.? I hate waiting 5 weeks for anything!

What is the exact weight of the real ones? I see a guy on Ebay that sells them for $12 a pair, and has a picture of one of them on a scale for some reason. It’s showing 42.6 whatever the heck that means!

so, now that i have purchased four pana ncr18650A bats for the king i now read about the pana ncr18650B 3400 bats? i also saw mention that you did not need protected cells in the king, would it be worth stepping up to 4 unprotected pana 3400’s? or does everyone think protected is the way to go.

I’m also keen to see an answer for this question, I am tossing up between Panasonic NVR 18650A and Panasonic NVR 18650B’s for my Sky Ray King.

Everyone on this forum seems to like the Protected batteries I’ve noticed.

i just got my pana 18650a’s charged and replaced some new ultrafires. wow! WHAT A DIFFERENCE! if the only difference is more run time with the 3400b’s not sure if it is worth the extra money. if there is a battery i can use that gives me more otf lumens i will try it.

Wow, so the Panasonic 18650’s are really that good? Impressive…

No, the UltraFire’s are really that crappy… All ???Fire batteries that I have seen are crap. And probably fake crap at that. I’ve seen counterfeits of counterfeits of counterfeits of …

Batteries are one thing that just are not worth taking a chance on.

So I just did the 10K resistor mod on my Fandyfire UV-S5. Do I need to run IMR’s since the current is higher now?

I’ve been loving these for the price. They are more like 2600mAh because they are the 4.3v cells (circuit only lets them charge to 4.2v), but should last a very long time in terms of cycles and be very reliable. The Panasonic cells are higher capacity but for the price I’m not sure if these can be beat right now.

I run 3 x protected AW (2200mah) + 1 x Ultrafire in my UV-S5, and 4 x SenyBor(panasonic 3100mah) unprotected in my SRK, the Seny seem a lot better than the AW run time wise, if that’s any help.

NEVER mix cell types in multi-cell lights. You need to run matched cells (same type/capacity/age/number of cycles). It can be VERY dangerous to not use matched cells, particularly in lights with the cells connected in series.

I’ve been doing it over 35 years, so not going to stop now.
