Any recommendations on something cheap, floody with a wide angle that I can use to light an area (garden etc) when working outside? About the floodiest lights I currently have are a BLF A6 and a pair of S2+’s.
I’m probably missing the obvious, but I can’t see anything to actually buy there. I’m up for buying a replacement reflector if it’ll make a difference.
I’m also on the lookout for a close work headlight (are there many high-CRI headlights out there?) but the basic idea for this light is for area/static lighting, almost a replacement for external floodlights - but I recognise I won’t be looking at the same output as a mains powered floodlight.
ETA:
For extended runtimes on high I’m considering something 2x26650 based btw.
The S2+ has best genes for a cheap flooder. It has no wide head for a useless big reflector and it is budget but solid. Modifying one of your S2+ is the cheapest way to test what beam angle you finally want. (A too large angle might give you too little light intensity or too little runtime outside.) Just test it.
For a very wide angle of 80° a Carclo 10170 reflector would be the best choice - but you need an account at Mouser, Digikey or any other specialized sellers to buy them. Or you could by some other stuff from Kiriba-ru and get one free
Ledil C13353 LEILA is a similar reflector with a slightly smaller beam angle.
The reflector of the S2+ has a diameter of 20.4 mm and an overall height of 11.6 mm. Anything around that diameter and below that length may fit (or you can make it fit).
A popular choice for different beam angles on the S2+ are TIR optics. Fasttech’s 21.2*12.6mm PMMA Lens for Cree XM-L will directly fit into a S2+. It has 60° and there are other (narrower) beams available. Details and screenshots here.
Fasttech’s 90 Degree Optical Condenser Lens will need some rework because it is too wide (22 mm) and too long (14 mm). Most other very wide angle TIR optics are quite short (around 9 to 10 mm), like the 80-degree Lens. I have not tried it but taking a few threads away from the front of the pill and using a spacer against the battery may do the job.
And finally you could make a Mule - no optics at all. Just position the emitter directly behind the lens on a long heatsink against the pill like it is done on most S2+ Triples. The Cree XM-L2 LED has a beam angle of 125° but you may lose something from the total reflections at the lens if you want one.
Oh, I forgot: There is a diffuser available for the S2+. Review is here. I will definitely try it.
Any reason it has to be battery powered? Just run an AC cord out to the nearest tree and string up a bunch of these
Pick whatever bulb you need for color and brightness.
Forget about it being cheap, bright and long running. If you want enough Lumens to light up an entire near-field of view for gardening, your budget is going to be blown on batteries. Now of course that all depends on just how big and how bright of an area you need to illuminate, and what kind of run times you need it to be.
x2 on the headlamp recommendation. Since you’re in the yard working, you will need your hands and illumination wherever you are turning your head to look. Something with a large emitter die and small orange peel reflector. I have been partial to zebralight headlamps over the past 5-6 years. I recently got a TH20 in 5k tint and it seems like a worthy replacement.
The other member above recommended a mule… its a good recommendation, but I always end up blinding myself with those. Just a glance into the LEDs and I’m seeing spots.
That’s a comprehensive reply thank you. But I think I want a bit more output than the S2+ is putting out. I’ve just remembered I’ve got some diffusers knocking around and they do fit the S2, but on testing outside I think I’d need a couple of S2’s to make it work.
A few bits mentioned look worth ordering anyway though, so thanks.
That’s actually a very good shout, I am looking at floodlight type output but at risk of seeming greedy I was hoping for the convenience of a flashlight for storage/packing etc.
If I can pick up either option cheaply enough then that sounds like a possible.
That’s crossed my mind, any particular recommendations in the ‘budget,’ category?
