Chouster, your comments are valid but maybe a bit strong outside of the vaping community. Other than in triples and quads, unprotected single cells don’t reach the current ratings. Within the bounds of single cell/single emitter lights efest cells perform as consistently and reliably as any I’ve used so regardless of the fact that they are wrapping other cells they are choosing good ones to put their name on. Anyone who chooses to push cells to the limit of the ratings should perform due diligence on those cells and verify what they have and what it’s capable of. That should be obvious enough but it never hurts to post the reminder. But 10A, 20A, 35A, is all a bit misleading as those ratings aren’t really applicable in a single emitter host. The best high drain cells have less total capacity than the best high capacity cells and from what I’ve seen Efest does tend to pad capacity #’s but not egregiously so. They are a good value for what should be considered as a generic brand. Another good value is the LGHE4.
Oh, and Scott? Because of the 5 LUM 5-90’s on the way (or maybe one of the others, not sure yet) I also just bought over $100 worth of metals to build a light to go with some of the reflectors. I’ll have to buy more cells, it’ll probably take 14 in the light as I’m drawing it…
I’ve read a lot of these posts (but not all 5805 posts) and gleaned a lot of good info. But one thing I can’t find is if I need Flat-top or Button-top batteries for the BLF X6/X5 lights. Specifically the AL ones. Thanks!
RBD, I really don’t want to argue with you or Dale, I don’t want to argue with anyone. It’s just my opinion. I’m not a native speaker (I guess that’s obvious), therefore just trying to express my opinion without offending anyone.
As for unprotected cells not reaching the current ratings other than in triples or quads: Brett would’ve easily surpassed the current rating (for cont. discharge) of the cell that’s inside the purple Efest 3100mAh IMR with this BLF X6SE II. That’s the main reason I wrote my comment and I think it’s something one might want to know before buying that cell. I’m sure he would’ve been fine as well as the cell and the light. I just like staying inside the current ratings from the manufacturer (the real one). That beeing said, the NCR18650BE performs way better than you’d suspect it to from it’s current rating, but it’s certainly no 20A cell. And to be fair, Keeppower did the same thing with this cell, they wrote 20A, 3200 mAh on it. Even Fenix were marketing this cell as a cell for high-drain devices, but at least they wrote “NCR18650BE” on their ARB-L2P.
And I believe you guys when you’re saying these Efest cells perform well or even best. By all means, if you like’em, go on buying and using them. But please accept my opinion. I just can’t imagine they have access to cells we don’t know of. Therefore I’m staying with my opinion that the new 3000mAH 35A Efests must be either 30Q’s or HG2’s and I’ll be buying those.
Chouster, if the cell can’t give the amperage, the light won’t pull it. The protected cells will either trip protection or simply deliver less output than a high discharge cell. Either way, no danger to speak of. At the very worst, if protection trips that cell can’t be used on Turbo. Most cells like the BD or a Sanyo UR18650FJ will simply deliver less, as in the charts I showed up above. It will then be a simple matter of not utilizing the driver for what it was intended, that’s all.
No biggie, we all have our wants and wishes, most on a similar slant but with some variations. It’s what keeps things interesting. (and real!)

Got the light, and I’m in love, absolutely gorgeous! Took it out for Valentine’s Day hehehe.
The UI is absolutely brilliant, somehow better than the A6’s! Didn’t think that was possible!
My one and only question is: how do I turn thermal calibration off completely? I did a factory reset…but it still seems to kick back a bit (barely noticeable) after 10 seconds or so.
Edit: nevermind, kinda a stupid question, I just set it to 3 mins, now she’s all sweet
Just updating here… I switched batteries and finally got some efest high drain 14500s from Illumn.com… and have had no additonal problems with my X5. The protection on the Olight 14500 kicked in sporadically it seems. Sometimes the light would work fine and sometimes it wouldn’t.
