C12 with 2 x XP-G2

I had some aluminum stars from FT that hold two XPG LEDs. They've been sitting around for a while so I thought I'd give them a try. I had a C12 that accepted the 20mm star, so I was good to go.

The stars aren't the best of quality, and I went through a few tying to to reflow the two XP-G2s. A Qlite wired in parallel to provide 1.5A per emitter.

So far so good. Everything is tested and works.

All I have to do is position the reflector and tighten down the bezel and lens.

OK. Let's give these twins some gas!

I definitely call this a fail!

A big black hole in the center and overlapping rings.

If anyone was thinking of trying a build using these FT 2x XPG stars...don't.

I might try that with a red xpe and a white xpg2 and see how it behaves with only one led on at a time.

Good idea.

if you clear coat (stipple) the reflector most of the donut hole should go away

I don’t think stippling will do anything for the void. Basically, two emitters are not necessarily better than one. I just had to prove it to myself. This build is going to be dismantled.

It might work with the TIR lenses with ridges that spread the beam laterally, often in bike lights.

It will be just as bad, only in a very large reflector you can get away with a led so far off-center, or heavy orange-peel.

What distance was the wall away. I’d like to see a shot at 50 meters.

It doesn’t matter. The black hole just gets bigger.

Thanks for testing! I was thinking about this twin led star, and about if you could have 2 different leds with 2 different drivers. So you could combine a flood and throw in one flashlight.
But that doesn’t seem like a good idea then.
